I no longer get a popup notice that I have a new private message---is it just me or is it universal?

Your notification settings might be turned off.
At the top of the screen click on "Settings".
Then under "My Account" on the left side of the screen click "General Settings".
Then scroll down until you find "Private Messaging".
Find "New Private Message Notification Pop-up" and make sure "Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up" is set properly.
