    Sad

This has been a long time coming--and it is a shame---but true.

When you fall from grace with Pete Wells at the NYT your life is going to change.

With the reputation formally earned and widely known it will take time--and so they have a real opportunity to turn this around. If they fail to do that eventually this will catch up to them--and that is always sad to see.

For a better choice I suggest Keens Steakhouse in mid-town.

Dude, when this date happens we need an embedded reporter!

BS aside, I don't know what to think of the article. I liked the place because it was always a party when I was there. It reeked of excess in every way. Im not sure I ever saw a sober person there. I don't remember the service being good like it was in some of those fancy french and italian places we went.

Keens looks like a joint worth a trip to NYC and a hit to your wallet. Peter Luger’s not so much! Makes you wonder why the food critic kept coming back for the misery?

I have always struggled with the hype extended to Peter Luger's, the steaks simply didn't measure up to my expectations. I did not like the way they were cooked and then to cut open a lovely piece of meat immediately after taking it off the grill is sinful to my thinking.

The waiters who played offense are not without company. Another famous restaurant in Boston, Durgin Park, did the same, as do others---some with intent and some in-breed As an aside, Durgin Park closed this year after 200 years of operation, another sad passing.

And for the drunks---I'm not sure of the density but I have unfortunately seen my share---it seems some clients think that such an invitation is also an authorization to be not only drunk, but obnoxious. I have been asked to leave (and take my "children" with me) in some of the better places in the land. It still remains an embarrassment---on occasion I have considered the possibility of joining in so I could save myself from the embarrassment---but the idea dies almost as quickly as it arises

The almost universal offense of these "children": endless loud vulgarity

I try not to make a habit of it---it surely is not "my" circle of choice

My worst period for that was not current, it was in the early 70's and I was on the road. My immediate boss, who was an excellent engineer--and sadly a poor drunk would come to the jobs to "visit". It seemed that most jobs had owners reps who were also drunks (extremely common in road warriors) and would always join us for dinner---and lunch for that matter.
I was never allowed to politely decline---I didn't drink at all at the time and so I was the "safe driver".

Being sober, with a bunch of drunks, who are also "out of town" never has a good outcome. I was always amazed at how funny things seemed to them and I saw no humor at all

Now, when I have to entertain people who I do not know it is always a crap shoot---but a bad night will not be repeated with me.

I hear that, Ben. Maybe someday I'll escape opioids - but not today.

When you want to try, do it slowly by having your doctor lower the dosage.

Funny story (kinda'). When I broke my leg I felt myself becoming dependent and woke up one morning and decided to stop taking them. Within about 3 days my body started to seize up on me and my muscles became very painful. So I took to the internet to find ways to counteract the withdrawals. One method I found was to soak in a hot tub as hot and as long as you can stand it.. So I did. It really felt great and helped to easy the pain in my muscles. UNTIL... I got out and realized I had heated up the tibia nail that was insert from my knee to my ankle... It hurt so bad (cooking my tibia from the inside) I had to take a couple pain pills. I got an appointment to see my doctor the next day and told him the story. His reply was that it served me right for trying to kick a powerful drug without his help. He had me completely clean within 3 weeks with no side effects...

It can be done. It won't be the most fun thing you've ever done, but it is manageable if your doctor will help.

I know this because my wife, before we got married 13 years ago, was on an insane dosage that rendered her pretty much of a vegatable. Her pain management doctor had her on 80 mg of Oxycontin 4 x daily along with 40 mg of Oxycodone 4x daily for break through pain. There was some other stuff thrown in that I don't remember, but it was the "holy trinity" of pain killers and muscle relaxers that has killed so many people over the years. I got her with my primary care doctor and we started the process of weaning all the while her pain management doctor just kept writting scripts. He also happened to own the in-house pharmacy that filled the scripts. The standard definition of a "pill mill".

We switched pain managementy doctors, which was hard because none of them wanted to touch her because of the dosage. Finally we managed to find a doctor and wean her down to a much lower level.

Quite some time after we left the first pain management doctor, he was arrested by the Texas Rangers and DEA. The practice and pharmacy were shut down and the doctor's current address is %The Texas Department of Corrections where I hope he spends the last days of his life.

After my wife passed away last May, I had a long talk with the pathologist who performed the autopsy. She assured me that her death was not drug related. I started to tell her about the pain management doctor who almost killed her and the pathologist named him before I told her. It seems that doctor had sent a lot of business to the medical examiner's office before he was arrested.

Now, if you are still with me, all of that was just to let you know that there is hope and you can get off of the pills with the right doctor helping you. Don't expect a miracle or try to go cold turkey, but you can do it when the time is right for you. You will know when the time is right and get your doctor to help.

My wife developed a nerve impingement in her neck this fall and went to doctor specializing in pain management. She was not taking the hard stuff, nor wanted it, but just to get to see him we filled out more paper work than we did buying some houses we have bought.
