Dang Polly,
What are you shooting and where?
Going for the pink vapor effect hey?
Does cut down on field dressing time

Actually, we're in the throes of relocating to the Canadian Rockies...wanted an insurance package a bit more potent than the 30 06 when stomping around in the back country. Currently leaning to the 338 due to available ammo...
Polly,
When choosing a new rifle always look at ammo availability and cost. Several years ago a friend of mine bought a .338 to go on an African hunt with. He got to thinking about what if something happened and he needed more ammo for whatever reason. You cannot just go get .338 ammo at a lot of places, especially outside the USA. He said that you can buy 30-06 anywhere so he ask me if I had one. I did, It was a Tikka and he bought it, took it to Africa and made a one shot kill on everything he shot. Not saying one is better than the other just throwing that out there.
Are you relocating up there to live? I've heard it is beautiful. You will probably get along very well with Trudeau, eah.
Bob
Don't think 338 will be a problem in Canada, an ami of mine packs the 338 when he's running his dog sled...might be prudence to match up
I've just never felt the need
I have brought down everything I have gone after with my beloved 7mm Mag with never more than one shot----and that includes elk, caribou, and bull moose. Lesser size big game the choice is a 270 Win.
For the record I have spent a lot of time in brown bear country so the question has certainly come up. My "fishing gun" is a 44 mag---but I sing a lot and I sing so bad I have never confronted an angry bear---a few that looked like they were laughing at me but none that wanted to eat me.
I have a theory---I shoot best when I have a gun I am comfortable with---and that does not include the 338---they hurt me and I don't like getting hurt. I have worked up loads for friends on those heavy calibers and I just don't enjoy shooting them.

I've always enjoyed shooting large bore guns...the largest to date are the Wall Guns...
and, the Hand Mortar
never had a problem with flinching...
They are going to just love those in Canada, LV.
