    Snowflakes' Latest Low Point

The British contingent of snowflakery in the form of their largest national student union has issued rules for attendees at their annual convention that they should refrains from clapping or cheering during the event because it has “serious impact” on the accessibility of the conference to the deaf and they should show approval through "jazz hands" instead, or else those disrespecting the order will suffer "consequences" if they do not. Empathy gone insane.

This isn’t the first time the student union has tackled the issue of clapping. In the past, some NUS events banned clapping because it might “trigger anxiety”.

Please do not suggest the group order the audience to cease breathing in sympathy with any asthma suffers in the crowd, as these nimrods might envoke the imperative on their willing followers with deaths as a result.

You might want to consider terminating your perusing of the British tabloids---it would most certainly reduce your anxiety level.

FWIW---I suspect this could have some substance to it---which has been ignored by the stellar source of this story.

I suffered a sudden loss of hearing (the medical term which is abbreviated by SLH) last Nov in my right ear. Literally, I woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible ringing in my ears and what I was to find out a total loss of hearing in one ear.

It has had a profound impact on me. My left ear has tried to compensate and by doing so loud noises become almost unbearable. I now carry an ear plug with me and if I am in a noisy venue (as in many restaurants) I have to plug my left ear which allows me to both tolerate the noise level and be somewhat functional in the conversation.

I have also become somewhat of a tyrant in meetings---I can deal with one speaker quiet adequately but when multiple people begin to speak simultaneously I become confused and what is being said is simply incoherent. I am unable to separate sound sources and it simply becomes a jumble of noise to me.

I have since talked to a number of people who suffer from partial hearing loss (including SLH) and hear similar stories.

My wife who wears two hearing aids also told me that is the reason so many people today use devices in both ears to prevent a similar condition of confusion.

Now---would I ask others to not clap or cheer---no---but do I now avoid venues like that when possible---absolutely.

Sorry to learn of your hearing issues, especially for a music lover, but I'm sure you have no wish for other to do backflips in sympathy like the Brit stooints are doing.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness---but no---I would not suggest anyone go to those extremes but then I have never understood the British obsession with "properness". I do expect that my lovely wife will return home at some point and be sure to tell me how much she appreciates the British "manner".

I, on the other hand consider them far too haughty.

I have a similar ailment to your imbalanced hearing except with my eyes. About 15 years ago, I awakened one morning and my right eye was black as a lump of coal and I was blind in that eye with gradual sight returning over the next two years. When it did return that eye was much less capable than the other and compensating between them is quite disconcerting. Nobody ever said we were going to get out of this in one piece!

OK, what about blind people.. Now they will not know if there is cheering or not.. If they stand with jazz hands they will drown out the people in wheel chairs.. What about
disabled people with very limited use of there hands, they are left out.

    Very inconsiderate bunch they are...!

They seem even more inconsiderate of us financially disabled folks who can only hope for a belated shaky cell-phone video uploaded to YouTube by one of the more fortunate few ticket holders......Ben

The doctors originally told me there was little chance of my hearing ever recovering. A prognosis I thought a bit questionable when they could not even tell me why it happened. They eventually decided by the process of elimination that I had acquired a virus in my inner ear and despite treating me with steroids to reduce swelling there was no effect. I did get my first "ride" in an MRI device while they looked for a brain tumor that didn't exist. In any event, I have had some minimal recovery. At first I could "feel" sound, then actually hear something but could not hear tone or even begin to understand words. I use ear buds to test on a weekly basis my change and very very slowly it seems to be improving, more so in the lower frequencies. I give myself a weekly hearing test on line.

Strangely, listening to music on speakers is impacted only by a lack of separation. Using head phones seems almost normal but when using ear buds there is simply a "dead side". One of the more annoying things is to be driving and have someone in the passenger's seat---it seems I have to continually ask them to speak up since I can't hear them.

It sounds as if I am complaining---I am not, at my age I think I am doing pretty well----I can still turn the other ear

Dumber than a doorknob Billy??? Do you realize that puts you about 10 notches above a liberal? Congratulations feller, it's like Ben said. There's some pretty slick doorknobs out there.

Snowflakes — the generation of people who became adults in the 2010s most often sheltered in colleges and universities viewed as being less resilient and more prone to taking offence than previous generations often demanding "safe spaces" from onset of reality and "triggering" events. Fragile.

I thought those were millineals... I don't keep up with the labels.

I heard a comment from Jerry Seinfeld. He said he does not perform at colleges because the kids are so easily offended that he does not have any material.

Probably the same reason Don Rickles (RIP) didn't get invited to commencement speeches often......Ben
