My Mess Sarges would say don't put out something that you wouldn't eat.
About the last six months I was in, one of my friends offered to cook pastry in exchange for being off rotations. Doughnuts every morning and cakes, pies or cookies available for the afternoon or evening meals. I never found out if he went on to open a shop as they were that good.
