‘Intentional vandalism’ reason for mass power outage in Moore County, authorities say

MOORE COUNTY, N.C. — A state of emergency has been declared after the electrical power grid was “intentionally attacked” causing a major power outage in Moore County.

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office confirmed those details in a news conference Sunday evening.

More than 45,000 people in Moore County are still without power. The outages began just after 8 p.m. Saturday night across communities in the area, according to Sheriff Ronnie Fields.

Sheriff Fields said firearms were used to shoot and disable equipment at two substations in Moore County.

Power could be out until Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office and Duke Energy officials. Duke officials added that the repairs will need to be sophisticated due to how damaged the substations were.
The photos show a substation that has not been "hardened". All substations here are now surrounded by 10'-12' masonry walls to prevent this kind of attack.

Impacting others' lives is empowering. Particularly for those not wielding power themselves.

My guess would be drunken punks or a disgruntled employee. Either way they should pay a high price.

I think this was done with intent and forethought.

Maybe so it could be a case of domestic terrorism.

After the 2020 election, far right groups discussed how to engage in this sort of domestic terrorism. They figured out that by sequentially taking down a handful of power substations, they can disrupt very large regions pretty easily.

If they can figure that out, so can other groups, so while the issue came up as a far right domestic terrorism issue for people disgruntled by the results of the 2020 election, there really isn't any reason to confine the discussion to them specifically.
