Cargo volume at Port of LA drops to lowest since 2009
The Port said many shippers imported goods well before peak season.
LOS ANGELES – Cargo volume at the Port of Los Angeles dropped 25% in October compared with the same time in 2021, and to the lowest numbers seen since 2009.
The decline, according to port director Gene Seroka, was due to an earlier peak season than usual as many shippers imported their holiday and fall product early. The reason for this he said was to potentially avoid any labor disruptions caused by lingering negotiations.
“With cargo owners bringing goods in early this year, our peak season was in June and July instead of September and October,” he said.
Shippers also diverted their goods to East and Gulf Coasts ports to dodge any labor issues, hurting numbers.
The port brought in 678,429 twenty-foot container units in October, 22% lower the its five-year average.
Seroka predicts imports to remain weak for the rest of the year. “November numbers will be soft and so will December’s here in Los Angeles,” he said.
