Electric Car Sales Soar But Raw Materials a Concern: Report

Sales of electric cars accelerated last year, but the availability of critical raw materials such as lithium risked slowing the sector's growth, a report warned Monday.

At 6.6 million last year, electric vehicles sales more than doubled, and they now account for one in 10 new cars sold, according to the International Energy Agency's annual report on the sector.

With the current crop of electric vehicles, there's not one I'd buy. However, when battery/storage issues advance, I could see it happening. I'd want a 4x4 with heat in all the right places to combat our Winters. And, I shouldn't have to buy all the bells and whistles to get it.

Range is a real issue with me---and the published range drops dramatically when the weather turns cold.

Yeah, that's my issue, Dave. I'd want the range to at least get me down to St. George during the Winter. At this rate, I think I'll be waiting 5 to 10 years to see that happen.

When I'm out on the road going to/from Las Vegas, I see Teslas on the road out in the middle of nowhere. When I do, I think, "Man, that person must be pretty confident of their ride to be out here."

There are stretches of road that are 100 to 150 miles from a filling station or auto shop. I would not be as trusting.

Ben mosty electric vehicles do not have any openings in the front. No grill is a dead giveaway if you are looking head on. As for style I tend to agree they all look alike.

Did see the Mustang from the rear the other day and wondered what it was until I recognized the 4 door side view. Must say I was impressed.

I've never seen an all-electric car around me. Winters regularly see 20 to 30 below and it is a long way to the nearest city. Can't imagine what range they'd have at those temperatures, running the heater, but apparently, no one is brave enough to find out.

Lots of Teslas around here. Next door has two, house behind them have three!
I’ll never have one nor any other EV.
I still have my 2002 Excursion 7.3, only 73,000 miles, it’s gonna outlast me

Some places have secondary benefits. As an example, on the Long Island Expressway they can run in the HOV lanes without passengers. However, that is not always a blessing. Senior citizens out for a "drive" also qualify

That kinda kills the whole purpose of a HOV lane.

Well went by the Toyota dealership today to see if they had any new car 3 or 4 total. Was wanting to check out the Tundra with the hybrid option. Guess that's on the backburner for now.

Salesman did mention they are jacking up the prices 5 to 15K just to get one. May have to use the wife's Toyota pull to get that below dealer invoice. Will see.

No EV for me until they can at least get a minimum mileage of 500 per charge at a reasonable premium over gas.
