Yeah, these were huge vehicles, by modern standards.
My father was in the hospital for 3 months when I was younger after a Diesel rig ran over his VW Bug in Modesto, CA. When he got out of the hospital he bought a massive Oldsmobile 88 - which is the same chassis GM used for the biggest Caddilac they had. If I recall, the massive V8 in it got around 10 MPG. That sucker sure rode nice.

Captain would be most appropriate because it felt like a land yacht going down the road
Just mentally comparing the ride and handling of that to my Mercedes is two extremes. Driving the Lincoln you never lost the feel of a big lumbering hulk. The Mercedes is big in today's standard although not equal to the Lincoln but it does not feel like a big car, I never feel like I am riding the waves.

Yeah, German cars are well known for their tight, yet comfortable, ride.

I would have been drunk as well. My old VW's were damn cold in the Winter, but they sure handled the snowy and icy roads well.
My 1st car was a 1966 VW 4-speed fastback with the flat 4 engine. It's one of many I'd like to have back again. I think that's why I recently bought the 1957 Porshe 356. It's got the same VW flat 4 as my 1st car, and reminds me of it when out driving.

Well, I did drive up from Italy and through the Alps in a Smart Car a few years ago, and it was a pleasure, but it was not in the winter, and I was not drunk. I think Smart Cars are German, if memory serves.

Of course they are German, what else could they be?

Yeah, Mercedes developed the Smart cars. They've got a remarkable and strong design. I've seen them motoring throughout Europe but have only seen one on the street here.

The Smart Cars you see here are all 2-door hatch-backs. The one I rented in Italy was a 4-door, which is much more practical to my way of thinking, although the tiny 2-door versions could park on the crowded streets of Europe, where parking is at such a premium, by just driving in a space nose first. Do not ask what happens in a wreck though.

I generally prefer to drive over all other forms of transportation but one trip that is an exception is the journey from Zurich to Milano. I rate that trip as the most picturesque journey I have ever taken and taking the train allows uninterrupted viewing. Unfortunately, when driving, I am forced to turn my eyes from the scenery to look at the road.
On one trip I had one of my "daughters" with me and I was excited to share this trip with her---and much to my disappointment she could not keep her eyes open---I was distraught
We still talk about that.
