    Wireless Meat Thermometer.

After many attempts I think i have finally found a wireless thermometer worth recommending. Insert it, open the app , select the type of meat ,the cut and desired wellness. It tracks ambient and internal temps and alerts you via your phone when to remove it from the heat and let it rest....

    MEATER

I've found it to be accurate in getting it to the correct wellness..

    Very cool

Here is the one I use on the smoker.

Doing away with the wires would be a real plus.

Did you buy this thermometer, Phil? If so, how do you like it?

I had a bit of experience with my other brand this week, when I fired up the Traeger pellet grill for a 15 lb. brisket and a couple of racks of ribs. I could not get my wired thermometer to feed a signal to the sending unit and connect to the receiver, so it was useless. I put the brisket on @ 1:30 AM and the feed on the Traeger was working fine when I checked in the morning ~7:30. Everything was cooking @ 225 degrees after I put on the ribs ~9:30, and the brisket tested @165 then with a hand probe. When I checked again a couple of hours later, the pellet feed had clogged or sucked a dry hole in the pellet load, and the fire was dead with meat down to 90 degrees. Rats! Fired it back up and finally got the meat off together about 7:30 PM @200 degrees for the brisket & 190 for the ribs. I’ve encountered the feed issue before, probably because of user error and attention to detail keeping the pellet reservoir filled enough and smoothed.

Long and short, I need a good working electric temp gauge and the Meater has some features I like, such as totally wireless and the probe measures the temp of the meat (of course), plus the temp in the oven, which no other meter in Amazon seems to do. I want to be able to readily see if the Traeger has quit on me without going outside and checking (it was raining this weekend). The totally wireless configuration also allows it to be used with a rotisserie I have of my grill, which no other probe with wires will allow.

The comments on the middle range Meater on Amazon were somewhat spotty, hence my asking your experience.

Btw, despite the crazy timing of the smoking described above, both the brisket & ribs were top rate, surprisingly. Part of that may be that for my first time ever, I bought a brisket labeled as “prime” at Costco, and it tasted like it was — very moist and marbled. This time I just salted & peppered the brisket. Paid $4.99lb. instead of the more usual $2.99, but I’m thinking it is worth it. You have to take the labeling on faith because there is no way to see the marbleing with all the fat on it. I forgot to remove the ribs’ membrane because I got the dry-rubbed prepared Costco St. Louis ribs and figured they had done that, but they were scrumptious anyway.

A 15 lb. brisket and 2 racks of ribs is a tight fit on a small Traeger, but it can be done.

I haven’t ever had an issue with my pellet feed. Probably because I putz around the thing all the time.

I’m not sure how long mine will run on a full hopper. Probably around 8 hrs or so on a smoking temp setting.

I just did some beef ribs on Sunday (I know, but I wanted something different). 6 hours and they were pretty good. My wife even liked them.

I agree about getting a better grade of meat. Hard to find around here though.

OK , I need advice from all you pros. It's time for me to join the modern age and need to know if the Trager Pellet grills are so much better than the competition that they are worth the asking price ?. Several brands are anywhere from 3 -500 $ difference for the same " grade " of grill.

If I do get one , is it worth the price for the upgrade to the high dollar unit or , will a " mid range " do the job ?.

    HELP and thanks in advance.

Tough question. In my view, Traeger has been making these things for a long time and probably has the bugs worked out better than most. But as Joe pointed out, the pellet feed system is the key. Take a look at the reviews for the new Weber and you will see what I mean.

As for size, I have the big one. And my smoker is the big one too. I will probably be getting the small one for the cabin. Except for Thanksgiving, I could have gotten by with a smaller one.

    .

Yes and I like it. You may want to get the one with the longer range. I use an old phone and leave it on the table on the patio. Range is the only issue I have experienced.

I too think the longer range of the $99 one is the way to go for me.

Well, after reading for a week , I pulled out the card and ordered a RecTeq 590 . I has a temp probe so will see how it works out. I compared it with the Trager and finally said what the hell. Spend the $$$$$ on something you want rather than give it to someone after you die.

Will let y'all know how it works out.

That explains why my gun safe is starting to bulge a little...I've acquired another 107 guns since last September, of which I still have 48...Last weekend was a washout - three out and three in, but overall value increased significantly......Ben
