    Proper Motivation

McCarthy was apparently on the phone with Trump when the mob attacked. McCarthy demanded Trump do something to stop them. Trump repeated the usual lies, that these were Antifa, not Trump supporters. McCarthy shouted at Trump that they WERE Trump's supporters and to call them off. Trump replied "well, I guess they are more upset about the election than you are". McCarthy then got a lesson in loyalty to his Don.

Pence got the same lesson. Trump was on the phone to Sen. Tuberville when the mob attacked. Tuberville informed him that Pence was being taken from the room and he had to cut the conversation short. Trump knew his VP was under attack as it was happening.

So he sprang into action, got some popcorn and chortled as the mob hunted members of Congress to hang them, watched intently as they shouted for Pence's blood, and sat raptly as they beat and killed Capitol Police.

Yet some say he should be given a pass, not called to account due to worries about process.

    Unfathomable.

Ah well. I guess you could say that he was just making sure everyone was properly motivated, down in their bunkers, when he called to lobby them to keep him in office for the next four years.

    More to this shameful event:

But Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) noted that, according to Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Trump had been on the phone with him just before he sent the tweet, and Tuberville had told Trump that Pence had been evacuated. “The tweet and lack of response suggest that President Trump did not care that Vice President Pence was endangered, or that law enforcement was overwhelmed,” Cassidy noted. “Does this show that President Trump was tolerant of the intimidation of Vice President Pence?”
Van der Veen disagreed with Tuberville’s statement, and pivoted again to the House managers’ lack of an investigation.
At the end of the day, it was clear a number of Republican senators were troubled by the lawyers’ refusal to engage with the facts of the case or with the House managers’ argument, but it seemed as if Trump’s lawyers had provided enough cover for them to be able to vote to acquit.
And then someone threw a spanner in the works.
Just after the Senate adjourned for the day, CNN broke the story that gave details about a phone call between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Trump as the rioters were breaching the Capitol. As McCarthy begged the then-president to call off his supporters, who were at that point breaking into his office, Trump allegedly said, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.” The two men began to shout at each other, with McCarthy demanding: “Who the f*ck do you think you are talking to?”
Trump did not call off the rioters for several more hours.
The story is explosive, showing that Trump did indeed know of the lawmakers’ danger and that he refused to help them.
Also interesting, though, is that this story came from “multiple” Republican lawmakers, who provided detailed information to the journalists at this crucial moment. They said that Trump had no intention of stopping the riot. “He is not a blameless observer,” one said, “he was rooting for them.” One of the sources named in the story, Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), said, "That line right there demonstrates to me that either he didn't care, which is impeachable, because you cannot allow an attack on your soil, or he wanted it to happen and was OK with it, which makes me so angry."
Another source, Representative Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH) said, “He was not sorry to see his unyieldingly loyal vice president or the Congress under attack by the mob he inspired. In fact, it seems he was happy about it or at the least enjoyed the scenes that were horrifying to most Americans across the country."

After the Capitol security team rejected help from other agencies, what would you have the president do to quell the riot? Break the leg off of a chair and wade in amongst them? Maybe Teddy Roosevelt, certainly not Trump, he might get his hair mussed.

He could have started by putting down the popcorn.

He could have tweeted for everyone to stop, that this isn't what he wanted, that everyone needs to leave. They were following his tweets in real time.

He could have called an emergency address on TV and said those same things, instead of how they were special people.

He could have called whatever military he could to stop the riot. Posse comitatus be damned. Worry about the legalities AFTER you save the lives.

He wasn't powerless. He chose to do nothing to assist.

This "action" by trump's cult was so despicable that the simple lack on his part to do anything is damning---and the more information that comes out the worse his actions (not simply inaction) become.

trump has displayed a complete and total lack of a moral compass for as long as I have known him but this just might have been the least deniable public example of that---the man has no limits---no bounds to his own dishonor.

The Senate just voted to hear from witnesses, given this new information. Trump's attorney's response - no fair, the article is for incitement to riot, anything that happened afterwards is irrelevant.

Imagine having to argue that one in front of the jurors whose lives were put in jeopardy by your client's actions.

And even as this case moves into another phase----there is a DA in Georgia looking at trump's actions (et al) regarding the election and his attempted arm twisting of State election officials.

..who knows how many unpaid legal bills trump will rack up. It is interesting to watch the qualifications of his lawyers slip away---obviously not all lawyers are brain dead

He could have gotten on TV to inform the public of several organizations that people could donate to bail them out after they were arrested.
