One Brand to Rule Them All

Something I did not realize - a whole lotta individual brands of whiskey, including some real pricey ones, are made with base stock whiskey from Midwest Grain Products. Around 95% of the finished product of these brands is absolutely the same as the competition. The list below doesn't even count the non-MGP brands which use MGP base stock.

It is all marketing, folks. A tanker full of MGP base stock is cut with some extra flavoring and voila! High class, store liquor.

MGP will make the end user's mash bill and then the end user does whatever they might do to the base to make it their own. It might be additives or it might be in the aging.

The deal of the day is JTS Brown.. same JTS Brown that Paul Newman orders in “The Hustler “.. made by Heaven Hill.. same mash bill as Evan Williams.. just a different location in the Rick house..

If you mix cheap bourbon.. JTS Brown is a bottom shelf to try.. (it does wonders for Canada Dry, 7Up or Pepsi)

All bourbon tastes like gasoline to me.

My great grandfather distilled his own brandy from wine he made from fruit grown in his backyard. We called it "palinka" and he'd pull it out on holidays. He'd pour you some, you'd toss it down and he'd say "Yach somash?" (how does it taste) and we'd say "Dobray! Na zdroveye!" (Good! To your health!). Dedo did not speak much English but he loved making his guests happy. You could smell and taste the plums in the final product.

My bourbon, Woodford Reserve, is not on that list, which is just fine with me.

Having, over the years tried to taste test them all I eventually deemed it a fools mission. I drank far more bad bourbon than I needed.

Scotch is aged in used Sherry Barrels.. when you have an opportunity, taste Spanish Fino Sherry from Jerez de la Fronriera.. you will taste where Scotch gets the barrel taste..

But be warned .. have clean hands.. the Fino Sherry is so dry that you will have to pry your tongue off of the roof of your mouth..

I recently decided to try Hennessy Very Special cognac. The jury is still out, but it is a nice sip.
