Well practically Mt Lassen Volcanic National Park was the only place in California not in lockdown so off we went for Christmas. It's bout a 4 hour drive from our home. Daytime temps were high 40s and it dropped down to 21 at night. The first two days were nice and clear and we hit the trails. The snow was typical sierra cement so boots, gaiters, Kahtoola Micro Spikes and trekking poles were all that was needed until we got a bit higher and farther away from the more traveled areas. Ruth being much lighter than me didn't need to use snowshoes. I started breaking through the crust about two hours out and switched to snow shoes. We were wiped out by the time we got back to the camper. Pizza Night one and BBQ chicken and salad the second night. Christmas day a winter storm blew in starting around 2 am. It was just starting to dump when we left at 8am. Did the first 20 miles in 4wd just keeping it nice and slow.
Coolest place was the Sulphur Works , Boiling mud puddles and steam plumes
