    dang I'm sore

the smoke cleared so I went out for a bike ride. Now mind you this is the first ride in over a month and during that time I have only been doing weight lifting. I set out to do 15-20 miles max...then I turned up mines canyon, and did a nice 6 mile grade. I came back down and instead of heading home I figured whats an extra few miles? lets do 20...well that 20 turned into a hard 30. My legs shoulders back, you name it are all sore. I passed out in the hammock after a post ride beer.

Pegged the old ticker for most of the ride too

excellent. stay hydrated and don't over do it. But have an effing blast...

I was going to ride dirt but all the wildlands are closed to entry due to extreme fire danger. Road Riding is all I have right now

I shot and packed out an elk yesterday by myself. A little under 4 hours (short pack), a personal best for this soon to be 60 youngster.

I notice it in in my lower back and hands. An old man's hands get sore from skinning a thick-skinned critter like an elk. I said last years bull would be my last because I'm too old.

I'm headed out in a couple hours to spend a week running the call and camera on another elk hunt.

I drove the golf cart to the neighbor's place and visited for a bit. Does that count?

Curious, what does it entail to “pack out an elk?” Do you mean cutting up the edible parts or the whole damned thing? I doubt I could pack 50 lbs. 100 yards at altitude and rough country.

My worst two, a big bull caribou on the tundra. About a half mile to the lake shore. The tundra is extremely hard to walk on. It took me from about 10 am to dusk---I can't remember how many trips. I cut that up and put it into bags, the rib cage and most of the spine stayed where it dropped. You have to do a first class job---including taking out all the meat between the ribs. When the wardens fly over they want to see day light between the ribs of any carcass.
You cannot take the head or cape out until all the meat is gone.

The other, a bull moose---but I had help on that one. We quartered it plus cut the neck and head off. It was only about 200 yards through a clear cut to the road but there was a lot of taking turns! Both were done with a pack frame---I can't imagine doing it any other way.

I drove my Kubota diesel side by side down to the lake and did some catfishing. Caught two for dinner yesterday. I felt fine afterwards.....................
