    Pony Express

Going through photo files this morning looking for a likely candidate as a background for Zoom meetings I ran across a photo taken on the Pony Express Trail. Both Hunter and I have made that trip from Camp Floyd, south of Salt Lake City, west to Nevada, south of Wendover.

This could be presented as a "typical" view of the trail. It's a great ride

“It’s a great ride”...unless you had to make it on a horse and with a deadline.

There is no question that would change the focus

So, in your picture I see both what appears to be a dirt road and a section of single track.. which one do you follow? Is this something that needs to be traveled on a dirt bike?

I'm thinking about getting a dual sport bike and doing some weekend exploring....

I have to admit I did that in a rental car. I terrorized more rental cars in Utah than I could count. After two weeks the bottoms were shiny. The guys in Jeeps always gave me strange looks.
That small track is likely from dirt bikes. I can't be sure about that particular spot but there are huge tracts of BLM land in Utah. They are heavily used by folks on all sorts of toys.

That single track you see is most likely used by both dirt bikes and ATVs. I used to ride with four friends from work (one of whom loaned me his wife's ATV) up in the Wasatch Mountains. It was awesome. We don't get to run like that in the East. We have State ATV trails, but nothing like what exits in Utah. The only problem was that everyone drives like hell and those mountain trials are narrow and loaded with blind curves---people can and do get into serious trouble. Out in the flat desert areas people go out there with their RV's and spend the weekend riding with virtually no limits or constraints---it is a level of freedom we don't know here. They have an endless tailgate party from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening

Here is another shot along the way---this is an extremely interesting rock formation:

My wife and I have been out on the Trail lately, Dave - and it's still a good experience.

The wild stallions are doing great this year. There are approximately 200 of them that hang out at the big water station North of Simpson Springs. Every year the mares form a protective circle around new members of the herd and move with them as the youngsters move. It is very satisfying to see the horses in action.

The only problem we're experiencing is Covid. It's really hurting Wendover Utah/Nevada right now. The casinos in West Wendover are almost vacant - with no live bands playing entertainment in the lounges. So, ending the journey at Wendover is an anti-climatic end for the Trail.
