With life seemingly in suspense---my window proves otherwise

It is encouraging to see that not all the world is impacted by covid-19. Our deer herd broke up as usual in April when the new fawns began arriving. Since then I see deer everyday but not in the herd. The yearlings that did not breed still hang together in groups of two and occasionally three. The bucks form less tight bonds but tend to hang out together in twos and threes. The mature doe---no where to be found. They became nocturnal. Now, they are beginning to show up with their fawns but still only in family groups. The first was here late yesterday with two fawns who ate grass and nursed while mom ate and swatted insects that were bothering her. They didn't stay long, but this clearly marks the next period of behavior that follows an annual pattern that probably dates back to before my ancestors got here 300 years ago.

The next change will be early fall when the herd comes back together with all the new members providing entertainment for the veterans.

Nice kitty. I'm waiting for the cats to show back up - just bears so far for me. I have a BUNCH of new pictures since I got my semi-real camera. But they are big so I have to fool with them to get them on here and thats a problem if you are lazy like me.

We have lots of baby deer this year. But last year for the first time wild turkeys showed up, and yesterday I saw a mama and a bunch of chicks! They say they are Rio Grande's that moved over from Utah (10 miles away), but I don't know enough to tell. But with the chicks, I think they are here to stay.

I use several different programs to edit photos, but for that particular purpose I found that the resize button on old-fashioned Microsoft Paint (the original version) is the quickest and easiest for me...A couple of clicks and I'm back to doing what's important in life......Ben

Late yesterday there were two does in the field with three fawns. The one with twins may well have been the one that showed up the previous evening. The fawns, as they always do, were playing with each other, running and jumping. It seems that when they come out in the field they relish the absence of trees to run into and exercise their geographical freedom---at least until mom steps in and puts the kibosh on it. That usually doesn't happen until they get into the "look ma at how close I can come to you without hitting you".

The season moves on. The loose grouping of deer back into liquid herds continues and now the bucks have inserted themselves with the doe and their fawns. Last night the first group was nine doe and fawns plus three buck. At this point in the year, the buck play nice with each other and the doe---their time will come when the frost is on the pumpkins. As I was watching there were two siblings running around and being kids. At one point they ran to mom, one on each side with their back ends toward me. As they both took a "fuel stop" their tails were up and wagging a mile a minute---happiness is warm milk It wasn't long and they both disengaged and returned to their play.

Later in the evening there were two more doe and three fawns with three buck---and they were not the same buck as in the first group. I still see lone doe, likely yearlings that did not breed. They tend to keep a different schedule and I most often see them during the mid-day. Soon, they to will join the herd. It will not be long, until I begin losing the ears of the first few rows around all the corn fields as they beat me to it---but that is a small price to pay for the entertainment they bring to my window---and warmth to my soul

A word about the corn---the deer do not make pigs of themselves, they consume what they pull off. The bears, on the other hand are destructive. They commonly lie down and roll around, knocking everything over in their path. Once they have a big area down they will begin to eat---but seldom consume the majority of what they have destroyed.

That "boy" best improve his aim (or find out where the target is) before the "straight" season begins---or he ain't going to get none
