Monday, October 12 – Columbus Day

I guess they will do away with this federal holiday for sure!

The idea is to supplant in importance the 4th of July with Juneteenth a couple of weeks in advance by substituting it for the nothing Holliday of Columbus Day. It is going to work...at least to the point that the switch will take place.

He is kind of a "Custer figure"---in a more honest look at him he was not exactly a benevolent protector of the rights of the aboriginal peoples of his new found world---there was a lot of raping and pillaging going on. Even putting it in the context of the day it is hard to ignore.

However, the native peoples did not suffer without retribution. Columbus and his merry band brought home a sovereign. Columbus quickly shared his with his sponsor Queen Isabelle who subsequently shared her's with any and all royal of Europe who happened by for a visit.

“‘The origin of syphilis is a fascinating, compelling question,’ Zuckerman said.”

Thanks for that find, Dave, I had never heard of the Columbian Theory to explain the introduction of syphilis to Europe before, as well as the effects of eating pelagic seafood on carbon dating.

In many ways the history of man is our screwing around.

Besides it looks like new discoveries point to others being here well before old Chris made it to the shore. So much for the "discovering" idea brought up when I was in school.

Maybe if Whitey hadn’t “discovered” the America’s, the indigenous native tribes would still be here taking each other prisoner, ripping their hearts out and throwing the bodies down the steps of their pyramids to curry favor with the Sun God.

I'll be anxiously awaiting the study from the Berkeley Institute for Advanced Anthropology Studies on how that scenario would have been far better than their eventual degradation and the humiliating fate of operating their own tax-free casinos and soon-to-be firearms factories on tax-exempt reservations, and how all this ultimately must lead to a guilty verdict of the Trump Administration, (we'll figure out later what the actual crimes were)......Ben

Whitey stole the land fair & square just like the Lakota Sioux did before us. The Sioux moved into the Dakotas after the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara were decimated by a small-pox epidemic and defeat of the Cheyenne who claimed the land before them. The defeats of the other tribes was as undoubtedly brutal as you can imagine. The plains Native Americans were no peaceful agrarian peoples.

If we are going to start giving back land we WASPs stole from the Indians, we better start early and stay up late because we are going to have to give it all back.

Columbus Day has never been a thing anywhere I have worked until the Italian New Yorkers decided to make me celebrate it. Made us give up Christmas eve.
