Joe, to increase your understanding of why the Navy is embarking a more than 50 year old AWAC aircraft on board its new 13B$ aircraft carriers instead of some more modern design, I submit this unclassified Rand report I uncovered for you...I'm sorry but I'm unable at this time to present you with the more detailed version due to the constraints of the National Security Act......Ben

Btw, I was going to say that the scoop affair looked surprising like RV air conditioner units, and it turns out they are.
Some of the trouble with eager assistants is shutting them off...

I'm happy to comply with your wishes by shutting up...If I'm needed, I'll be in the corner chewing on my necktie and wailing in abject grief......Ben

So I ran out of neckties, and submit this one: A fighter jet converted to a propeller driven plane earning the title of the loudest aircraft ever built...And for those who want a mere sample of this noise level, listen at your next airshow when a Vought F4U Corsair cruises by with its 2380 HP engine spinning its 13 foot diameter prop...The tips of the propeller blades are supersonic transmitting their own sonic boom four times per revolution......Ben

Now that’s what I call weird!
Odd that there is no mention of the effects of the extreme volume of noise on the pilots.

Even more weird is the fact that the idea just won't fade away...In the 80's both P&W and GE were researching separate ways to make the technology work...I'll try to find out where it stands today a little later......Ben

Naturally the Rooskies, with their fetish for really weird aircraft had to get in on the act with the Progress D-236 propfan engine which was fitted to several different testbed aircraft...I don't think the idea is dead yet, but it seems to be on the back burner for now......Ben

Unrelated to the notion of converting jet engines to drive propellers, but still in the realm of really noisy props is the Tupolev Tu-95, said to be among the most uncomfortable airplanes ever for those trapped inside during flight...Using four 15,000 HP turboprop engines driving eight contrarotating nearly 16 foot diameter propellers, the noise created by the engines combined with the supersonic roar from the 32 screaming propeller blade tips led to permanent hearing loss for many crewmembers...But the Tu-95 still holds the record for highest sustained airspeed in a prop driven aircraft, and is still in service today in the Russian bomber fleet as well as long range maritime patrol......Ben

If I recall, an auto show I used to watch had Jay Leno riding a jet-powered bike. And, as usual, Leno was talking about what he liked and disliked about it.
If Leno would allow it, I'd hang with him for a week (or two) and watch him demo all of them.

I would expect our friend Billy would have seen a few of those "Bears" during his time in Alaska. They commonly harass the coastal regions. A poor second to our B-52s.

Here's a good video on the Bear showing some closeup detail plus start-up and takeoff......Ben

We had some mention in another thread that the Russian Bear bomber makes some ungodly volume of noise that wears out the crews because the tip speed of the props is greater than the speed of sound creating constant sonic boom, especially at altitude, where the speed of sound is lower than at ground level.

That's also multiplied by the 32 propeller tips in constant rotation in however many revolutions per minute......Ben

...What we're looking at is a six-person private craft that promises to fly at jet speeds, but with eight times lower fuel consumption, and a range that's twice that of a comparably sized craft.
Bold claims indeed. Otto Aviation says on its website that 31 successful test flights have so far been performed, with aerodynamic efficiency proven in 2019, bolstering its declaration that "the Celera 500L is the most fuel-efficient, commercially viable aircraft in existence."

... Laminar flow is the minimum drag solution for aircraft surfaces, explains its website, and features smooth layers of airflow with little to no mixing of adjacent layers.
The Celera 500L's fuselage takes advantage of an optimum length-to-width ratio to maximize laminar flow. Laminar shapes are also used for the wings and tail sections.
