    Life With Covid 19

"The 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic is an ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China, in December 2019. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020 and recognized it as a pandemic on 11 March. As of 30 March 2020, more than 775,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in 200 countries and territories, resulting in approximately 36,500 deaths. More than 160,000 people have since recovered."

This post is an attempt to see how our members are doing in their daily lives while our country, and the world, deal with Covid 19.

My wife and I live in our first house that we bought 32 years ago. We are both retired but do charitable work, my wife as a Zoo Docent and me as a Charitable Financial Advisor. We usually work about 1 day a week. We are not rich but are financially secure. We like to travel, mostly on cruises - we've done 60 of them. And, we love going down to Las Vegas - but we don't gamble. We simply like the entertainment and food options readily available there.

Frankly, our complaint with this whole virus thing is what can be called a "First World Problem." Simply put - we are bored. We like being around our friends and family, but are isolating ourselves at home. We could theoretically go anywhere and do anything, but virtually all of our options have shut down. So, even if we were to go somewhere, we don't know what (if anything) we could do.

What's most important is that our friends and family (including all of you) are staying safe and healthy. We do not know anyone personally that has this virus, yet, we do know the terrible impact it can have.

Not meant in any way to be flippant, but in an effort to reduce possible exposure at the butcher shop---this week we will begin dinning on moose, wild bore, venison and what is left of a heritage (Berkshire pig). On the up side---this has fostered improved management of the refrigerator and freezers.

Easter Sunday will be a ham from a wild bore rather than a leg of lamb

Other than that---I am working from home and that is actually getting better as more and more of us adapt to it. My wife might not be adapting as easily as me---the poor woman has a deeply rooted addiction---to shopping---and on-line just doesn't measure up!

To date, only my one associate on Long Island has actually had the virus. Many more in the family are impacted at work. One son is not working but being paid, another is working with his spouse working 1/2 time. My SIL is now off---he had been flying freight (United) to London but that has now stopped. His wife (an NP) is back to work at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia after a two week imposed quarantine. She had taken a weekend trip to London on one of her husbands normal passenger flights at the very beginning of this and when she got back they would not allow her to return to work.

...and the grandchildren are off from school and working on a business plan to raise ducks for eggs and profit----and guess who the reviewer of the business plan is

My wife and I read. So the most disruptive item for us is the closure of the library's .

I should add that Easter dinner will just be my wife and me---and therein is the most difficult part of this situation. We are both very social people and look forward to spending time with our family and friends---and we are playing by the rules so that is all vorboten. Normally we would have a dinning room table (max 22) full for Easter.

One of our friends told my wife the other day that she would just like to be able to dress up and go out for a good dinner---I never anticipated that might become impossible!

    Yes, Bingo my friend.

I would not have foreseen this viral impact on our society either. Maybe I'm learning what it's like to live with something like the Plague. According to Wikipedia, with treatment about 10% of those contracting Plague die. Whereas 70% survive after treatment. Like others, I really thought we were way beyond worrying about disease impacting our lives.

That was confusing to me, too. Here is a quote from his link that clears it up:

The risk of death with treatment is about 10% while without it is about 70%.[4]

Yeah, I merely copied what Wikipedia said.

    Mea Culpa.

Ruth and I are really not social Butterflies. We do have a small cadre of Friends that we will get together with about once a month. She does her Tax Work for Lumileds LLC (corporate tax for all of North America) and trains her horse. I'm an EMT and Services Director for a small Ambulance and Medical Transportation company. Really the only change for us is that Ruth is working from Home instead of the office and we don't dine out.

I'm out in the field every day wearing a respirator and gloves and going in through the garage wen I get home, boots stay in the garage, all work clothing goes into the washer immediately and gets run and I go scrub down in the shower.

On the positive side the elliptical trainer and weight machine in our home gym are getting used daily and Ruth and I are spending way more time talking to each other. The Dogs love all the attention they are getting by having Humans around more

Other than not finding everything I normally buy at the grocery store, life hasn't changed much for me...I still do the same things I was doing before the panic...I do notice less precious metal on the roadside these days......Ben

We had our appointment to pick up groceries today. I also tried to hand carry my property tax check today. Had my cloth mask and everything (mask shaming here if you go out with an N95- which every farmer here has a box of in his shop). They were closed. Now I have to put it in an envelope, stamp it, go to the post office, where it will go from cortez-durango-denver-durango-cortez.

The biggest crowd in town was at one of the dispensaries. They have "curbside delivery", and there were probably 20 people standing in the parking lot. Six feet apart. Strange days.

On edit: I forgot to mention that if you pay your taxes in full, they are due on April 30. Because of CV, the deadline was extended to May 1.

    Hope everyone is safe.

I'm still setting in the desert 6 miles north of Quartzsite. I was going to head home on 3/26 because the plates on the truck and fifth wheel have expired. I called the courthouse and they are closed and one of the two woman was home under quarantine. The sheriff is not doing vin checks. They got a memo from the governor and 30 days after they open is the new deadline.

The little groceries in town have been kind of hit and miss but you can find most items. I probably keep two weeks for supplies in the fifth wheel, so no problem. New generator so I'm not worried about power. I can somewhat see other campers in the area but there hundreds of feet of social distancing.

I'm watching what happens in the next two weeks but planning om returning home before the end of April. I have wiring to do in two garages and need to modify the rafters in a 100 year old garage. Next year I just might need to go back to work.

Well it's different for us. We closed our store on Mar 31, after the Governor ordered a stay and shelter in place. Next day we went and got some RC items out of the store to bring to the house as we figure we may be a long time going back to work there. Also went got some supplies to fix and paint the place which is what I suspect I'll have plenty of time to get done.

Now that being said we never really brought home a salary but reinvested that money back into supplies. So now what if anything am I going to do for the future is up in the air. We have income to weather the storm but not enough to restart the business if what I suspect will be a long time coming back. And this was shaping up to become a profitable year. I put in for unemployment but not sure if that will come in, if it does it would help with the reopening of the business.

I don't see this going away anytime soon so to be honest I figure we are all in for the long haul. Everyone stay safe out there.
