Aircraft Carrier Captain Relieved of Command

The captain of an aircraft carrier struggling with a coronavirus outbreak has been relieved from command after a letter he penned pleading for help leaked to the media.Capt. Brett Crozier was relieved from command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly announced Thursday.

Crozier wrote a letter to Navy leaders that was obtained and published by the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday, in which he warned of dire consequences if most of the sailors on Roosevelt aren’t evacuated.

At some point the "who" will come out. I hope the "why" does as well.

    Agree.

I read somewhere yesterday that this carrier made a port call in Vietnam in the recent past, after the Corona outbreak. Nothing but a guess on my part, but I'm thinking maybe that should not have happened what with the virus running rampant. It doesn't make sense to me to endanger the crew and the mission of this vital piece of our military by making foreign port in the middle of a pandemic.

Regardless of the reason, I still thank Captain Crozier for his service and wish him the best in the future. You don't get to be Captain of an aircraft carrier unless you are an exemplary American Naval Officer.

It appears I was wrong in my analysis.

You can read the reported reasons HERE.

Whether or not Captain Crozier leaked the letter to the press, I believe he did so not only in the best interest of the 5,000 souls aboard his vessel, but in the best interests of the mission of his ship...Never the less, I think he will at least face a court of inquiry from the Navy, and seeing that he has already been relieved of his command, will also endure some form of punishment...

Examples come to mind when I think of two of the most storied ships in US history, which met ill fates...The USS Indianapolis (CL-35) was torpedoed and sunk after its final mission delivering key components of the atomic devices that ended the Pacific War...Its Captain, Charles MacVay was court-martialed and found guilty of failure to zig-zag, even though such action was to be at the Captain's discretion weather permitting...The commander of JIN I-58, the Japanese submarine from which the fatal shot was fired testified at MacVay's trial that zig-zagging under the prevailing circumstances of his firing solution at the time would not have prevented the ship's sinking...Later analysis from the Navy confirmed that the Japanese commander was correct, and MacVay's record was finally cleared decades after his life had ended in disgrace...Today the Indianapolis rests at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, a grave for the 300 men who went down with it...It was found earlier by the research crew of Paul Allen's RV Petrel...

USS Pueblo (AGER-2), while operating in international waters, was attacked from the sea and the air, fired upon and eventually boarded by the despicable North Koreans...One crewmember died of his wounds while the remaining officers and crew were held captive for nearly a year before their release...Commander Lloyd Bucher, who had served honorably in WWII, Korea and Vietnam faced charges from a court of inquiry in which a court martial was recommended...The Secretary of the Navy intervened, and Cmdr. Bucher returned to duty until his retirement with no hope of further promotion...Today the USS Pueblo sits moored to a NK dock where three generations of the non-human Kim family dictatorship has thumbed their noses at the US...The Pueblo is now the second oldest commissioned warship in the US Navy as it has never been decommissioned...Only the USS Ironsides has seen longer service...Ten gutless US President's administrations have failed to demand the release of US property...

I suspect Capt. Crozier will also face his punishment for doing the right thing, regardless of who leaked the story to the press......Ben

Yes - still a big deal, so I thought I'd read up on it...

The Skipper knew exactly what he was doing.. He sacrificed his career for the welfare of his crew.

Capt. Brett E. Crozier, the Navy captain who was removed from command of the coronavirus-stricken aircraft carrier U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, has tested positive for Covid-19, according to two Naval Academy classmates of Captain Crozier’s who are close to him and his family.

A Navy spokesman declined to comment on Captain Crozier’s Covid status.

The commander began exhibiting symptoms before he was removed from the warship on Thursday, two of his classmates said. Captain Crozier was fired following a leak to The San Francisco Chronicle of a letter he had emailed to Navy leaders that detailed the failures on the service’s part to provide the necessary resources to swiftly move sailors off the carrier and disinfect areas on board as the virus spread through the ship.
I pray for his speedy recovery---and reinstatement.

This jerk needs to be fired!
