    Moroni Drops His Horn

Well, we were hit with a 5.7 earthquake about 7 a.m. this morning. Many thanks to God, and our building designers, for a lack of deaths. At the epicenter, Magna Utah, there were some brick walls down. Magna is about 15 miles South of my house. For a moment, it seemed like I was back in So Cal again. We just don't get many natural disasters here. Interestingly, we're getting small aftershocks the rest of the day.

Other than my cats being upset and acting clingy, a fairly normal day. But, the Angel Moroni, on top of the LDS Temple in downtown SLC, dropped his horn due to the shaking.

Heard about it since one of my suppliers is there in Utah. Seems like a small shake compared to the ones I felt in Cali.

Yeah, we had so many quakes in Cali that we'd pretty much not think about 'em. But, here in Utah, it's considered a big deal. Our tv stations literally just ran a full day of programming about the quake.

Interestingly, the quake was from a small fault that runs along the Oquirrh Mountains. Our large dangerous fault, the Wasatch Fault, runs along the Wasatch Mountains and right through Salt Lake City. The fear is that, if that fault slips, it'll sever our water supply lines into the city. Water in the Salt Lake Valley comes mainly from the Wasatch Back, not the Wasatch Front. Las Vegas, through Lake Powell and Lake Mead, also gets Wasatch Back water.

Such great joke material.. but I can’t use it, have several LDS friends who I don’t want to offend..

LDS friends didn’t find the humor of me “being thrown out” of a Mormon funeral (and I was, it was a misunderstanding not involving me (I was collateral damage) )

I may ask “The Mormon Boys” about it.. they all stop when I’m out, I have sodas in the garage..

Ah, yes. The Mormons - which comprises half of my family. After living with them for so long, since 1970, members of my family have picked up many LDS habits. It's reached a point where now I'm much more likely to defend Mormons rather than criticize them. On the whole, they're good people. And, even when I disagree with them, they're doing what they think is right.

Overall good people.. the LDS life provides a wholesome inclusiveness, great for kids (upset about snitt with Boy Scouting)..

One of Their shortcomings is they don’t realize (or care?) that gentiles (non-mormon) are not familiar with their customs.. I’ve had experiences at weddings (not in temple, at Ward) funerals and Eagle Scout ceremonies where I didn’t know what to do next, where to sit etc and the rank and file just walked around me.. the wedding was a horror show ( mother of groom, mother is gentile, sat in wrong place and no one noticed until after the meal, a local had sat in the empty chair)..

The lack of taking care of visitors is the basis of the “thrown out of Mormon funeral” story..

Overall a very polite mannered group..

On edit: and like any exuberant religious group.. they have their share of hypocrites...

That wasn't very responsible of the Angel Moroni to drop his trumpet over a little thing like a light shaking

I enjoyed my Utah years and the Mormons that I worked with---and they tolerated my wise cracks about their idiosyncrasies.

That sounds like a story you need to tell us one day.

I’ve been thrown out of nicer places by better people! The old retort has been moved up to the Annandale Virginia LDS Ward and a Bishop..

Father of my brothers best friend died.. brother was in Jamaica so I attended the funeral and “showed the family flag”..

Father had a three part life.. first, raised LDS.. second, left church, married a gentile woman.. had two gentile kids.. had playboy collection (local boys sex ed) , drank and smoked and had USAF career.. third, divorced gentile, threw out playboy collection and married a good LDS woman and had second family..

We arrived at the church and there was a “meet and greet” in a class room.. saw our friend (son from gentile (Jack??) family).. we exchanged small talk and when asked “what the plan was” son replied that he didn’t have a clue, no one wants to talk to him except the few old neighborhood friends..

Everyone began moving out of the room, our friends oldest half brother (LDS family) noticed the gentiles still standing in the corner and gave a subdued “follow me “ wave..

Into the sanctuary and it was a nice service.. at the end of the service the Bishop announced that there would be a big “church lady chow down” for “FAMILY AND THOSE WITH INVITATIONS “.. none of the gentiles had received invitations so (all four) of us left..

A month later I saw our friend, he asked why we left without eating... I told him abut “FAMILY AND THOSE WITH INVITATIONS“.. he paused and then said that nobody had told him anything about what was going on..

Later I saw my LDS buddy and told the story.. buddies wife who is the daughter of LDS bishop (buddy converted to marry her) got very defensive (they had attended this Ward before moving).. she explained how we were automatically invited as friends of the son.. I explained that we had not received an invitation and no one spoke to us to be sure that we understood..

Note: the LDS wards are very active, vibrant communities.. everyone knows (or recognizes) everyone.. the local church members knew that we were not locals..

On edit.. an old guy.. all rumpled.. sat in front of us.. he fell asleep and began to snore loudly, half dozen locals in front of us turned around and gave us the “stink eye”.. I pointed at the sleeper, slouched over in the pew in front of us.. a woman came over to the sleeper and sat next to him and kept him awake.. our friends who used to attend that Ward knew all of the players, sleeper, stay awake watch and stink eye givers..

I’m thinking such close communities are having a tough time with calls for social distancing.

Yes, Joe, they are having a tough time with this outbreak - and the informal ban on large gatherings.

Most LDS I know will readily complain they have too many meetings to attend. But, take those meetings away, and they miss them. Knowing what "the ward knows" is pretty standard. It's an informal, yet highly effective, method of group communication.

the example our friend Sandman gave, that's what I'll bet was happening. The regular ward members probably understood what the invitation etiquette was. But, the outsiders did not.

I guess that means you didn't get to dine on the "funeral potatoes" hey

And here i am again. All LDS meetings, including funerals have been cancelled worldwide. This started about three weeks ago. Some are having problems with it, I am not. Part of the reason that the local people know the locals is because Mormon congregations are divided geographically, so you always go to church with people from your neighborhood. It isn’t a willful lack of desire to acknowledge you, it is that they are more concerned with the people they know who are there. It is a peeve of mine.
As for the funeral, the Bishop always makes that announcement, verbatim, and I have absolutely no idea why, and there is almost always way too much food for three funerals. Really, there should have been someone that told you. As a bonus, the food, including the funeral potatoes, is excellent. My parents ward (congregation) actually had an account with Honey Baked ham. It was an old ward that had a lot of people die.
