    I think it might be a carryover from the early "buckboard" horse drawn wagon. They were simple, cheap, and functional. They were built without a rigid frame. The intent was that the boards would flex as it went over bumps--thus improving the ride.

    I'm not so sure, Dave. It even has the same cross member under the foot pedals that is shaped the same as on the Flexible Flyer.
