It appears that the pilot of Kobe’s personal helicopter was taking chances flying under thick fog at 185 mph “scud running,” which is term to describe dropping under cloud cover low enough to follow landmarks (the 101 highway in this case). He was warned by air traffic control shortly before impact that he was too low.
The graphic below is presented as the fatal flight path and shows how the pilot veered across the 101 straight into a hill at high speed.

There seems some dispute as to whether or not the helicopter was experiencing mechanical difficulties.

When weather is a factor in an accident I always ask, where were they going that was so important? Leave it on the ramp and drive to your destination or delay until it clears.

BTW, 185 mph seems to be haulin butt at low altitude under clouds, especially in a hippityclopter. My bosses old bell wouldn't even do that falling out of the sky.
The old dude who ran the flying service I used to land me on dirt roads and goat trails out here on the Rez used to joke that helicopters flew by scaring the ground away.

They'll probably determine Spatial Disorientation as the cause. Most likely it was falling out of the sky when it impacted.
