The reality in the US is that to a degree we have already established a network that could be corrupted to preform covert and illegal activity silently. Involving a company like Huawei only escalates the likely hood of illegal use.
There are very few places in NYC where you are not on a surveillance camera. The value to the police is unquestionable. I often see the videos of crimes on the early morning news--and then the next morning the arrest of the perpetrators. It seems as if the bad actors have enough neighborhood enemies that have no qualms about dropping a dime on them.
While that serves a positive service it is only a breath away from infringing on human rights.
BTW, while the city has extensive cameras deployed across the city there are even a larger cache of private cameras that supplement the police network.

Use of cameras in the U.S. to chronicle robberies, muggings & murders is a tad different from the Chi-Coms using them and roving through communications to put dissidents into concentration camps for “re-education.”

Using AI to predict crimes before they happen was something of a startup a year or so before I retired. I have no idea how far along it has come and I have not read anything in the link I'm posting to a google search with lots of hits. Be afraid!

I just remembered. About a year before I retired the Navy NCIS came to us with an offer to trade information. They wanted access to our report database and offered reciprocity in exchange. What the hell does the Navy NCIS need access to our reports for???

I can easily see why law enforcement organizations desire broad data bases. Criminals do not restrict their activity to a narrow range of jurisdictions. I would not consider the NCIS request overly intrusive.

I believe that I was investigated by both the FBI and the Army equivalent of the CIA for my security clearance. I never had contact with any of them (at least to my knowledge), I came to that belief only by different people telling me they had been visited by one or the other.
