As it relates to changing lanes---it is a relative thing. Outside of NY the minimum gap is significantly greater than is the minimum gap in NYC. In fact, a gap is not always necessary, if the driver in the lane you want to be in appears to be even slightly timid----just do it!

Seriously--there are some roads, depending on time, where there is no viable reason to change lanes---the cross Bronx Expressway for one---you will go at 10 min/mile in any lane. It is easy to tell the uninitiated---they are the ones changing lanes.

Often seen, is the guy in a car who tried a lane change to the left, immediately in front of a big rig---who never even saw them down there---but they do normally feel them before they completely run over them.

I have to confess, on occasion I forget where I am. In NYC, getting in line is called taking your turn---hesitate for even an instant and someone else is going to take your turn. When I get home, I have to try to remind myself that what I might think is taking my turn can garner negative responses---horns and fingers seem to be common tools used in those cases

Finally, I got notice that the birth has happened and the new arrival is waiting in Chicago for an Uber ride home. Possible arrival date is the week of March 8.

The new car has happened---it is at the dealer---but I can't go to get it.

I told them to send me the invoice and I'll send them a check---and pick it up when I can---it isn't like I was going to take a trip

I just got a call from the General Manager. Because of the restrictions we are under, their sales have to be closed and they are unable to process anything like invoices, sales tax, title issues and registrations---so it will just sit until they can get back to doing business.

For us it has been serious:

New York, the hardest-hit state in the US, now has 21,689 coronavirus cases and 157 deaths.

New York City alone has 13,119 cases. At least 2,213 of those patients are hospitalized and 525 are in the intensive care unit.

    All righty then

I am going to finally get my new Explorer---but it ain't going to be easy

First of all---I have to make an appointment to go there. I will have a two hour time slot which allows enough time for the paper work and to sanitize the place after I leave and the next customer comes in.

Next wrinkle, it would cost me to do my normal write a check and pay for it---if I do that I get a $1500 rebate. However, if I finance it at 0% interest the rebate jumps to $3000. I think he said that is for five years.

However, if I take a fixed rate loan at (I think) 2% the rebate jumps to $3500.

So, I am going to finance $5000 until the first bill arrives and then pay it off in total---seems to be upside down to me

Before anyone points out the obvious that I should finance it at 0% at the maximum amount and maximum time---I get that---but I don't like monthly payments---or owing anyone money.

I'm pretty protective of my credit rating:

A very healthy rating, Dave...With my limited spending (and even further limited income), mine will never match yours...But this morning, depending on which credit reporting source I checked, it ran from 818 up to 834 (all out of a maximum 850)...And like you I juggle the numbers before any purchase...For instance last quarter Discover Card was paying me 5% to buy my meager supply of groceries, but for a limited time one of my Visa cards paid 5% plus the usual 2% it pays me, so for a few weeks I got a little extra back...This quarter Discover pays me 5% at the diesel pump, but another Visa card pays me 5% above the usual 3% I get with it...So before the month ends I'll top off the tank especially with the price of diesel right now at $2.15...An immediate 7 or 8% return on spending, combined with the 0% interest I have to pay, and never an annual fee is hard to turn down...

I was at 843 a few months ago, but when I bought the new place the added debt dropped it a tad. Thankfully, only a few points.

I once bought a car using a cash back credit card. The last time (maybe for the 2016 Explorer) they weren't having any of that. The maximum I could put on the card was $3000.00. I really don't blame them---it wears away their margin---and when I am done dealing there is not much margin left.

Mine seems to float between 840 and 850---and most of the time I haven't a clue as to why

I have also found that they don't all agree

If someone is willing to let me use their money for free for 5 years I will do it every time. Paying the payment is as simple as putting it on auto draft and you never have to worry about it again.
