Humans placed in suspended animation for the first time.

    Dayuum!

Doctors have placed humans in suspended animation for the first time, as part of a trial in the US that aims to make it possible to fix traumatic injuries that would otherwise cause death.

Samuel Tisherman, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, told New Scientist that his team of medics had placed at least one patient in suspended animation, calling it “a little surreal” when they first did it. He wouldn’t reveal how many people had survived as a result.

The technique, officially called emergency preservation and resuscitation (EPR), is being carried out on people who arrive at the University of Maryland Medical Centre in Baltimore with an acute trauma – such as a gunshot or stab wound – and have had a cardiac arrest. Their heart will have stopped beating and they will have lost more than half their blood. There are only minutes to operate, with a less than 5 per cent chance that they would normally survive.

EPR involves rapidly cooling a person to around 10 to 15°C by replacing all of their blood with ice-cold saline. The patient’s brain activity almost completely stops. They are then disconnected from the cooling system and their body – which would otherwise be classified as dead – is moved to the operating theatre.

A surgical team then has 2 hours to fix the person’s injuries before they are warmed up and their heart restarted. Tisherman says he hopes to be able to announce the full results of the trial by the end of 2020.

same basis for treating victims of cold water drowning such as when someone falls though the ice. At those temperatures the brain uses minimal oxygen and can suffer little cell damage. People have been successfully revived that have been under water for hours

Similar, but a lot different. Both chill the body with a result of greatly slowed metabolism, in this case, the blood is replaced with ice cold saline.

BTW, did your wife make it home ok with you and the wonder horse in tow?

It was quite the adventure. Day one Lexington to St Peters Mo. it started to rain at Louisville then just east of St Louis it went from sleet to Ice covered with light snow. By St Peters where we had a layover barn the freeway turned into a **** show of wrecks. We got off just in time, needed 4wd to get in and out of the layover due to an icy slope.

day two St Peters to Ogalalla NB. It was 7*when we started the first 30 was at 20mph due to roadway ice and wrecks and as we pulled out of the layover I hit a bump and cracked my front windshield all the way across. We must have passed 50 wrecked cars and thousands of semis parked on the shoulder. In Nebraska we got hit by a windstorm. It ripped the vent panel for the camper fridge right off the rig.

Day 3 Ogalalla to Salt Lake city, Windy but easy. Day 4 SLC to Livermore no problem except the heavy traffic all the way from Sacrament to the barn. 2600 miles 4 11 to 12 hour days of drive time 300 gallons of diesel

Wow! Glad I didn't have to make that trip. Glad you got home.

How many times have I wished to be in suspended animation while my wife’s nagging passed on by.

you don't need that. Just grow up with a Jewish grandmother and Mother in the house. You learn to blank it out or go mad. I drive my wife up a freaking wall because I can turn off my ears when she goes off.

This is interesting and timely. For, I saw the movie Passengers again today - where Pratt and Lawrence are interstellar travelers who awaken 90 years before the end of their voyage.

I hope it goes well for the patients.

I’ve been interested to catch that flick. I’m guessing if you watched it multiple times you must like it, right?

    On edit:
    Found it on Amazon Prime.

This is a very important step we must master if we are ever to leave our solar system. Of course we will need a much better propulsion system as well.

How do you keep the horse warm when it's that cold?
