I was just watching the evening national news report on the 2020 hopefuls campaigning in Iowa and it struck me, why are these elected officials not in Washington doing their jobs?

I don't know how it works elsewhere, but in Texas, at least at the county level, you must resign your elected office in order to run for a different office. I think that is an excellent policy that should be applied across the board. There is no way an elected official can do the job they were elected to do while they are running for a different office. The higher the office, the greater the dereliction of duty. Also, it would make the career politician think twice before jumping into a campaign with no chance of winning.
