Modern GOP has strayed far from the path of principled Conservatism

"George Will left no room for interpretation when asked whether conservatives would be better served by a Donald Trump defeat in 2020.
“Yes, yes and yes,” he told the Daily Beast. “There’s no question about that.” What a significant comment. Coming from one of the nation’s most iconic conservatives, it speaks to the level to which the president and his supporters have driven the Republican Party to extremism."

Frankly, I did not think my Conservative friends would like to hear this from me. So, I'm quoting one of the leading Conservatives instead.

I hear what you are saying but George Will got all pouty in 2016 because no one was paying attention to him and he resigned from the GOP. Since that time he has been a a typical Trump hater. But to your point about extremism in the parties. I will say this and mean it. I would trade all the candidates we have running today if I could just get Bill Clinton back. Of course to me Reagan was the best president of my lifetime. BUT with the clowns running in 2020 I reiterate I would take Clinton back (with all his warts).

There is no connection between what I signed up with 54 years ago, and while change is to be expected, a rush to extremism and abandoning the core principles that Republicans once embraced is not.

If trump does anything worth while for the party I hope it causes a rethinking of philosophy and returning to some of those core values.

I just took the time to read the entire piece by Mr Will. I wanted to stand up and cheer. He has said in writing what I have been feeling far more eloquently than I could do. Thank you Mr Will for being my spokesman

Let me remind you of who and what the Republican Party you “signed up with 54 years ago” stood for, as I signed up too and still count myself as an extremist for liberty, capitalism, individualism & the American Way, as Goldwater did at the time.

I hear you on Reagan, Honda. For, Reagan grew on me, and history will treat him well. Clinton... would be a stretch for me - but I can see it.

I suggest to you Joe, trump couldn't wear Sen. Goldwater's shorts. That is like comparing a conservative politician to disjointed floundering.

    Added in edit:

Does it not trouble you to call trump a Republican? He is anything but that, and frankly I have to question the credentials of any true Republican who supports him and his antics. What he knows about governance would not fill a thimble.

If there are any true Republicans out there they're probably not admitting to it.

I bow my head a bit when I do, but what is masquerading as Republicans now are only imposters--the party has been hijacked by extremist who needed a name.
