    California Is At It Again!

While I think college athletes deserve to be paid at least some stipend for their play, a single state trying to change the rules is not the way to go about it. At best California schools will be kicked out of the NCAA. At worst college sports as we know them will be destroyed. And, once again, we will have California dictating to the rest of the nation.

The NCAA sent a letter to California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday, explaining the ramifications of the state's Senate Bill 206 should it be signed into law.

Under the bill, college athletes in California would be eligible for compensation under an "unrestricted name, image and likeness scheme." The NCAA Board of Governors insisted that passing the bill would "wipe out the distinction between college and professional athletics and eliminate the element of fairness that supports all of college sports."

The NCAA also stated in the letter that the 58 NCAA schools in California would no longer be permitted to compete in NCAA competitions if the bill is passed since they would have an "unfair recruiting advantage" over the other member schools across the nation.

I think a while back there was a big movement in California to become it's own nation. Good idea. It's too bad they have these wacko folks running the place especially the governor. So many good folks in California have to deal with this crap.

I think we should cut a deal with Mexico for them to pay for the wall with our specifications, put forth a serious effort to stem illegal border crossings, and we give them back California in return.

Nah! It wouldn't work. Mexico has enough problems as it is. They don't need the kind of headache Cali would bring.

The sad part is that California is a beautiful wonderful place. Great weather just lots of lots. I have many friends there and they are decent good people. I have had a wonderful time every time i have been there. But the wackos especially in the last two years have gone nuts. They are determined to ruin the hell out of one of the nicest places on earth.

I agree with Kali on this one. As I must have stated here before, I have never understood how the NCAA and member schools could conspire between themselves to monopolize the services of young athletes dictating where they could play, for how long and how much they got in compensation, which is chump change, btw. They have all gotten together to set prices and competition. Outrageous!

Long past time to smash the monopoly. Who would imagine California would strike a blow for free trade & capitalism?

Joe I agree with you in part, but I question the motive of the California Legislators, I think they are more consumed with attacking the status quo on anything that is that is an American time honored tradition such as college football. Their zeal to legislate to define their myopic utopia is insatiable.

Joe, I agree in part, as well. As I stated in the original post, the athletes should be paid more than just the books and tuition. I don't know how much more, but it must be the same amount in every college in the division, or teams would more lopsided than they already are. Example, Alabama is a perennial powerhouse already. Imagine what they, or other teams with money could do to everyone else. Parity is a bad word to me in most cases, but this is one time we need it.

Someone has to say the sports in colleges are as bogus as one can get. Pay all the athletes the same and quit trying to hide your head in the sand. So are not there for and education but to play and to bad that most will not obtain the dream of playing in the Pros.

Fred take a look at Title 9 and it's impact on college sports and you will quickly see why it is an impossibility to pay the college athletes. The smaller schools would immediately languish and only the rich powerful programs would survive. At most schools the only profitable sport is college football, the rest lose billions a year. Here is a link that sums up a complex issue.

Fred, college sports are mostly just a farm league for the pros, especially football and basketball. I agree with what you said above. Pay them all the same and those who don't make it to the next level at least have something to show for their efforts.

Again it's not just paying the football players under Title 9 if you pay a football player you have to pay EVERY other athlete in EVERY other sport both male and female the same amount. It would bankrupt the smaller universities. Now if Congress were to amend Title 9 you might could make it work, but don't look for that to happen.

Unlikely in the world we now occupy, Mike. Forced egalitarian bull hockey has taken over the world, and we are all required to bow to the fiction that everyone is equal, and we must force people by the use of the power of the law to tow that line. The idea of paying everyone the same is the natural end-game of such irrational thinking. Restricting the idea to merely the powerless young only makes it more wrong. Time to dispel the notion that everyone is equal in value. Sorry, guys & gals, but the wideout who runs a 4.4 40 yard dash and can catch is worth a hell of a lot more than one who runs a 4.7 and has hands-of-stone even on a college team. Nature ain’t fair and monopolies are the bane of a free trade system. Many of these athletes have one set of skills they can monetize in their short competitive life. To artificially deprive or skew that by allowing an all-powerful monopoly to set and enforce all the rules goes against the fundamental rules of our free enterprise system.

What would the media people say if all the media companies in the world got together and decided all reporters would get paid at the companies’ whim and preferred rate until they were, say, 35 years old...for their own good?

Why would we think allowing or encouraging marketing of skills of young athletes will “ruin college athletics?” There are already several levels of competition in college athletics now. If it stratifies further among the haves and have nots, so what? Let it reach its natural level. If my old university (Baylor) can’t keep up with the competition, then it can drop levels until it can. It is not important to education. It’s just football, basketball, swimming...whatever. They are ancillary to the primary reason for educational institutions. The tail has been waging the dog. There will continue to be platforms in which the students can play, and then there would also be platforms in which the really good ones can play and be remunerated at the going rate. That is the way it should roll.

That's what I hear. That means if we go by California's new rules we can buy the best players and be unstoppable. That's not something I want to see. Not for my team, your team, or any other team. Some form of parity is required to keep things (sort of) fair. That's why the pro teams have spending caps and use a round robin draft. Without that things would get dull pretty darn fast.
