    Coal-Mine Closures Shake Wyoming

Sudden shutdown of two mines leaves many wondering what’s next; ‘Reality has come crashing through the door’
    From today's WSJ (partial):

GILLETTE, Wyo.—For generations, coal has been good to this bustling town of 32,000, where local mines have long offered well-paying jobs and filled government coffers.

Even as the industry collapsed in Appalachia over the past several years, Wyoming’s Powder River Basin, a resource-rich stretch of plains that produces about 40% of the nation’s coal, seemed destined for a softer landing. Locals in this northeastern corner of the state maintained that the lower cost of operating the region’s surface mines compared with mines elsewhere, and the quality of the coal here, would cushion them from the impact of the nation’s shift toward cheaper and cleaner natural gas—as well as tougher environmental standards.

But on July 1, two of the area’s 12 coal mines abruptly closed, leaving nearly 600 workers without jobs and sending shock waves through Gillette, which proudly dubs itself the “Energy Capital of the Nation.”

“It has been difficult to talk about the decline of coal in Wyoming,” said Robert Godby, director of the University of Wyoming’s Center for Energy Economics & Public Policy. “But…reality has come crashing through the door.”

Wyoming coal mines last year employed just over 5,500 people, about 1% of the state’s population, according to the Wyoming Mining Association. But coal’s economic footprint has been much larger. Revenue from coal, oil and gas has historically accounted for between 50% and 70% of Wyoming’s general fund, according to Mr. Godby.

That footprint has been shrinking, though. Wyoming’s coal production in the Powder River Basin declined 19% from 2015 through 2018, Mr. Godby said, and state figures show severance taxes paid by coal companies fell 26% over the past four fiscal years.
The saddest thing---all those people wearing red hats and believing trump's campaign bull chit promises.

The reality is not the boggy man that the companies, the unions, and trump claimed---the real boggy man is simple economics. The longer it takes for that reality to filter in, the longer it is until these displaced workers begin thinking of "what's next" and preparing for it.

Ironically, if there was a modern loading facility on the west coast, there is a waiting market for some of this coal---but the powers that have the ability to help that come to reality seem to have a blind eye to the NIMBY contingent, who to date have prevented any progress on building a new port facility.

No worries when your folks take over in 2020 they won't have to worry about healthcare, tuition or eating. It will all be taken care of.

You have drunk far too much of trump's kool-aid and it has taken a toll on you. I find sparing with the mentally handicapped is no sport at all---so carry on alone, you are doing just fine at making yourself look foolish, you don't need me to help you out.

I might add to the list sparring (spelled correctly) with north eastern liberal elitist who think they have the keys to the world is equally frustrating.

I hope Obama is not watching especially since he just put a multi million dollar offer in on an estate that virtually sits at or near sea level.

Once again, coal is not dying because of environmental controls.
If it were environmental controls trump would have had a chance to reverse it.

WASHINGTON – The last 265 workers at Kayenta Coal Mine are being laid off this month, another step toward the looming closure of the Navajo Generating Station that will bring the loss of hundreds more jobs this winter.

The mine was already down from about 350 workers last year and will likely retain only a token force of workers to help with cleanup after the mine ships its last trainload of coal to the power plant, its only customer.

“It’s a travesty,” said Phil Smith, a spokesman for the United Mine Workers of America, which represents mineworkers at Kayenta. Union officials said they are in talks with the mine owner, Peabody Energy, on the size of the remaining workforce.

The power plant is set to close at the end of this year after its owner, the Salt River Project, said it was no longer cost-effective to run the coal-fired plant when it could buy energy cheaper from natural gas plants. On its website, SRP said the Navajo Generating Station employs 500 workers.

I am trying to understand what the long and short term economics of the coal industry have to do with Trump. Is he causing this? Everything I read says this has been heading this way for years. Just because Trump promised to take some of the regulations off that were imposed by the previous administration has nothing to do with the long term trending demise of the coal industry. Now on to hurricane Dorian........Trump's fault I'm sure.

Other than Alabama, where Trump claimed the storm would hit (odd to me, though I think Trump is ill), I think our country is handling it all well.

Some early spaghetti models did show some potential tracks into Alabama and Trump as he is prone to do went off half cocked and mentioned Alabama, a devious mistake no doubt that the Trump hating media will not soon let him or us forget. Non story any other President. Period.

I remember the early tracking guesstimates made it look like it might jump across Florida into southern Alabama. I was concerned at that time it might get into the Gulf and come our way. Fortunately for Alabama and maybe us, high pressure forced it to remain in the Atlantic.

Mike you're exactly correct I didn't want to go into that much detail in fact early on I was worried that I might have to go down and do some boarding up. However fairly quickly it was determined that it was not coming our way. Actually I'm quite proud out of the way the president has stayed engaged throughout this entire storm. But then again I don't hate him and I'm not looking for the negative.
