The Panama Canal Zone was once ours too. I think Jimmy Carter gave it back.

At the time colonization was in vogue, so we joined in...to our detriment as it has turned out. We dumped the Philippines long ago (which we got from Spain also in the deal) for the headaches it caused, which I can safely say was a great idea for many of the same reason we should do the same with PR.

Now that colonizing is decidedly out of fashion, I posit that it is duly appropriate to divest. I’m judging you disagree and think imperialism is still the way to go.

To be clear, imperialism worked in places such as Texas, but then we asked to join.
I do understand that---but my point, which I seemed to fail to articulate well, was that PR had nothing to do with what precipitated the Spanish American war---they were no more than the handle on the pot--they were there but not in it.

The US also annexed Guam plus Cuba in a guasi overseer arrangement.

Here’s the deal and why we can’t rid ourselves of the Island — they provide scads of needy Democrat voters.
That is no deal at all---they have zero electoral votes---so that is a non starter.

Come on now, they gave us AOC.

I see---so apparently human rights are trumped by party affiliation. Therefore it would follow, based on your premise, that if Puerto Ricans were predominately Republican your position would be "adjusted"---OK--I get it

I deleted my posts in this thread after reviewing them again. Dave’s criticisms have shamed me.

Wow---I'm not sure of what to say

Added in edit: I had no intent of shaming you--if I caused that I apologize. I simply do not hold the same view on this issue and you have as much right to your view as me to mine.
