    I had no idea

    Just got a letter from the Coast Guard. It contains my dad's honorable discharge from the Coast Guard for service from 1941 to 1946. I had no idea that during WW2 the Merchant Marines were officially part of and in active duty as part of the Coast Guard.

    Indeed, and as strength was built up, there were Naval armed guards manning the guns on most of the convoy cargo ships in addition to Navy and Coast Guard warships escorting them...It was Coastguardsmen who were at the helm of most of the Navy's landing craft during the island invasions...If they survived the first landing they turned and went back for 2nd, 3rd and 4th waves......Ben
