As for the shot distance matter, much of the unit is in a 15 year old burn with elk feeding pretty much everywhere. You could literally shoot a mile if you wanted to. My self imposed limit is 500 yards. But if you evere get the chance to see a really big bull, that could go out the window. Prepare for worst case and hope for best.

By the way this hunt is in eastern Arizona so it’s about 6 hours from my door to the woods. I had 19 “preference points “ (think years)and still only had somewhere in the range of a 5% chance of being drawn (someone was kind enough to point out to me that I have a couple thousand $ invested in licenses and application fees over that 20 years). Because of the competitive nature of “trophy hunting “ these days the demand for these high quality opportunities means that most ordinary people will never get a chance to see what i get to this summer/fall. I don’t like what is happening in the hunting world.

I don’t care a wit about hunting or shooting one, but would love to eat on one.

Carrying them out is the fun part. The older the elk the crappier the meat. A mature bull in the middle of the rut is a tough old stinky booger. The backstraps and hanging loins should be good but its tacos, meatloaf and chili for the rest.

Mmmm, elk chili. That has a nice ring to it.

What kind of permits are allowed to take a elk cow?

One of my previous employers gave me a huge Elk roast. Not knowing what to do with it, I cooked it the same as a beef roast. It turned out to be the best roast I have ever tasted! Sure wish I could get a few more.

From my experience, elk is at the top of the meat eating pecking order unless you get a gristly old bull elk, as Curt warns. I think most of the commercially available elk meat comes from New Zealand and is muy expensive, as one can imagine.

Dave swears that moose is up there too, but I’ve never had any or been where it was served. I’m sure there are lots of other critters worth trying that Joe has never tasted. I’ll settled for elk anytime though.
