    Shooting---again

    From the NYT:

There were multiple victims in the shooting.

A sunny day at a shopping mall complex in this border city turned into chaos and bloodshed late Saturday morning, after a gunman opened fire inside a Walmart store, killing multiple people, wounding others and sending panicked shoppers into nearby stores.

The office of the El Paso mayor, Dee Margo, said in a statement that the police had confirmed several fatalities. The police declined to elaborate on the number and status of the victims.

Much about the shooting remained unclear as of Saturday afternoon. It was unknown how many had died and had been wounded. Police officials said one gunman was in custody.

The gunfire on Saturday in El Paso began a few minutes before 11 a.m., in a popular commercial district near Cielo Vista Mall with scores of restaurants and stores that are often crowded on the weekends. The Walmart store, located near Hawkins Boulevard and Gateway Boulevard West a short distance from the mall, was packed at the time.

At this point I am not worried about bad hombres coming north. I am way more concerned with crackpot white guys with semi automatic rifles going postal in public venues

I tried about five or six ways to respond to the post above and I just couldn't get one that I felt was acceptable or one that I would be willing to share here. So I refrained

Add to this one another in Dayton Ohio---9 dead, 26 wounded. At least the police neutralized the gunman.

My old days as a prosecutor taught me that there are a lot of homicidal nuts out there. There always have been. It is the human condition.

I don't question that---but something fundamental has changed

That's where I'm at too. There's no way I can get across to others the sadness I feel.

I do not think the change is so much fundamental as it is brought on by a copy cat psychosis fostered by publicity of modern day communication. Nuts seeing other nuts get attention jolts their psychotic minds into action. The other side of the equation is religious zealotry feeding off each other we often see not a part of the hate-filled nutery we are experiencing now.

Mental aberrations of humankind are too complex for me to understand, but history tells us they have always been part of us. I do not think it can be legislated away only guarded against to some extent. We will see a spate of new “solutions” that test what freedoms we are willing to give away to approach safeguards once again.

Ding ding ding ... we have a winner IMHO. Turn the media off and a lot of this crap will end. What has changed is the world is more connected than it use to be. nut cases are glued to the TV and interwebs.

I'd consider that a fundamental change---and I agree that could have a profound impact on unstable minds--so what do we do about it?

I don't suggest muzzling the media, but rather they adopt the same self-policing we expect from other fields of endeavor......Ben
