    Deer Report

The seasonal habits of whitetail deer have always been of interest to me---they move from herds to single animals and then back to herds again. We are now in the reforming period which will continue into fall.

In spring (April) the herd breaks up as the doe begin to have their fawns. They remain alone with their fawns until mid to late July when they begin to regroup. At the cottage we have a pair of twins (there is an apparent genetic thing in that area that results in a high occurrence of twins). The cottage is "deeep in the forest"---so our yard is like a playground for them. They run, jump, and chase each other back and forth while mom seems to be above it all and continues to eat. Soon they will be joined by other "kids" for more playmates.

At home the herd seems to grow almost daily. Thursday night there were six doe, four fawns and one very big buck with an excellent rack--still in velvet. That buck may stay with those does through the rut in fall---and beyond. The young buck will hang out with each other hoping to make a score. The old man will see to it that does not happen! After the rut they will tend to join the herd until the following spring.

They are now back to feeding heavily in the grass field below the barn. They had been eating in the corn and beans in June and July but now that the corn is high and the beans less inviting they are back to the grass.

As a side note, at the cottage the bears will start feeding on the corn in a few weeks as the ears fill out. They are pigs about that---they roll around on the corn, knocking down big patches, and then eat until they are full---then wonder off with a lot of uneaten corn ruined and left behind.

There are too few bears down here to make much of an impact---other than to the TV news stations!

It sounds like you plant corn & beans for the critters to enjoy, while you enjoy their company.

    Dude.....pictures.

I have seen a kazillion critters over the years and have finally got tired of saying "I wish I had a camera" (I have lots of old 35 mm stuff but never replaced it after the world went digital) . So my new Leica V-Lux showed up yesterday. I may have made a good decision going with the "easy" point and shoot route. As it is the instruction manual is 400 pages long.

Anyway, some of the local mule deer were kind enough to stop by so I could test it out. These are at about 200 yards. I'm gunna get me some good AZ elk pitchers.

Had to get a tool to resize them. This one was 15.5 megs

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

There could be some truth in that---which is exactly what has me thinking about alfalfa in at least part of the field below the barn.

Very nice collection of buck Curt---that is worth taking a picture of

What program did you get to resize? I have had problems doing that.

Does the Leica also video, and thanks for the shot?

For simple and quick resizing, I use MS Paint, which may not be available on inferior Apple products......Ben

Its called "image size" in the app store. Super easy - I did it on the iPad in less than a minute -- the first time.

Yes, it does remarkably good video and all you do is push a button. There are lots of features also that I dont even understand. It also does 4k; my son was kind enough to let me know I dont even own anything I can play it on.

I guess its also basically the same camera as a Panasonic z1000 or something like that. The Leica has a better warranty. It has wi-fi and I'm still trying to figure out why besides operating the shutter remotely from my phone.

With the wi-fi it should be possible to geotag all your pics...It'll be stored in the EXIF data......Ben

Your Hummingbirds must be a little different than our Ruby-throated---ours would never tolerate sharing a feeder---they would be in aerial combat

Also---is the elk picture this year? Are they already out of velvet?

We have a couple of feeders and a male lords over the other one. I think they are Anna's if my memory serves.

Those elk are in velvet. I guess if I had my 16 meg resolution you would be able to see. We saw one VERY large bull who was slicked off on Aug 8. That surprised me. But then again it is pretty rare to see bulls in that 380-400 range so I'm no expert. But I'm still watching and learning.
