    The New Beast

The new Beast in the stable. It's a 2018 MB AMG GT.

I had a MB AMG SL with the V-12 that I really missed. Per Benz, the new GT is supposed to be what the SL would have evolved into. We shall see.

Oddly enough your thread title is the name I came up with for my replacement ride early this year...But don't worry, Hunter, we'll work out a licensing agreement...And per the picture, your new ride makes you look considerably more youthful......Ben

Good for you---and enjoy every mile

It wasn't all that long ago that driving a MB was one of the more boring endeavors. Now----sot so much! I have to admit a bit of devil comes out in me when I have a chance to embarrass someone. Kids with their $1000 sets of wheels, a $500 exhaust system and a $250 car want to showoff, always win my attention.

Dave, I drive relatively slower than I used to drive - particularly in the snow and ice. I don't need all the extras on the Benz, but getting them now helps at resale time.

One of the fun features of the new Benz is the special programable exhaust system. You can literally dial in a race mode wherein the exhaust is routed by flaps to a straight-through system. Or, you can defeat all the safety programs (e.g., wheelspin and brakes) to make the car drive like an old muscle car. But, I'll stay away from fiddling with the programs. The car is smarter than me as it is.

Mine has many of those features as well but I seldom make changes. The 4 matic is good news bad news---it seems impossible to get wheel slippage---when I am offering better manners to the kids

The strange thing to me however, is that my Ford Explorer with all the bells and whistles has some things not on the MB----one being the front looking camera which I have come to value when pulling up to something I can't see, like a parking bumper.

The reason I don't get to drive it as much as I like is that I promised myself I would never show up at a customer's in it---that is an image I can do without!

That reminds me of the cable operated cutout valves we used to order from JC Whitney or Honest Charley's Speed Shop......Ben

I didn't need none of them silly cutouts! My "daily driver" in HS was a 1953 Chevy pick-up---that is when I had something to drive. At that point it was 8 years old---with lots of dings from being a farm truck----and a generous coating of mud and cow chit But--it was still better than my bicycle. I figured out a way of doing my own modifications---I took the front clamp off the muffler----and then I got a 2x4---just the right length---and I could reach under with that 2x4, get it properly positioned--and push the muffler right off the exhaust pipe.

When I got close to home---the reversal was almost as easy

I'm going to focus on the good news. 4 matic is pretty much mandatory in this Winter scene. At this point, I'm not sure I can find winter tires for it. The Beast may end up parked this Winter.
