    Laura Bush comments on Immigrants

    "Our government should not be in the business of warehousing children in converted box stores or making plans to place them in tent cities in the desert outside of El Paso. These images are eerily reminiscent of the Japanese American internment camps of Word War II, now considered to be one of the most shameful episodes in U.S. history."

    The Japanese were forced into the camps? These migrants are entering the camps of their own will.... They are free to turn around and go home.

    Ahhh…. an excellent question.

    My position is that we've become set against an enemy we do not have - and it's politics (and politicians) to blame. In other words, I don't believe this should be a crisis for our country. I believe there are far greater problems our country needs to address first - like our exploding federal deficit and our opiate problems.

    I do not expect my friends here will mirror my position. We can agree to disagree and remain civil in the process.

    Every civilized country has borders. The penalty for violating the border can range from instant death, imprisonment, or dumped back over from where you came. On the other hand there are some countries the US being one of them where folks who want to cross the border do so frequently and are housed, fed, and given health care without expense. The US is also infamous at this point in time for using the immigration issue as a political football and all the while hundreds of thousands of folks continue to pour into our country in violation of our laws which are uniformly not enforced. Concentration camp I say no, Holiday Inn, certainly not, better than where they came from certainly. Big problem and is only going to get worse. I hear condemnation of the situation long and loud everyday, but strangely I hear no solutions. 2020 can't get here fast enough to settle this once and for all one way or the other.

    The situations are not remotely similar. It's just another way to jab the President. Like I said before if I were covering her when she made that remark I would have said "Ms. Bush what solutions would you offer and what advice would you give the President". That would separate the proverbial wheat from the chaff.

    She is railing against a reality all of us abhor. She might as well have announced she is against poverty in general. Yes, Laura, we are all against the necessity of putting children in camps. We are all against poverty and the hell-holes from which they come. We are also powerless to change that part of the world in which we live. Does that mean we are for them wandering through the arid deserts until they drop as many do we do not find first? The camps are a lesser of evils even when Trump’s predecessors established and ran them.

    The statement was meaningless claptrap unusual for Laura Bush.

    like our exploding federal deficit and our opiate problems.
    I agree with you Dave, it's dragging us down little by little and nobody is paying attention. What I would add to the list so to speak is the politicians. Until we can get them under control nothing else is going to change!
    Locking some of them up for their crimes would do wonders but they have become mostly immune to it apparently.

    We have decided as a nation long ago with that particular problem that we will saddled up that pony, spur it hard, whip it into a full lather and riding it until it drops. There will be no discussion.

    I generally don't have a problem with immigrants. I don't like illegal immigration. I prefer to ignore the human interest bs. Don't like it in my halftime shows either.

    The elements of the current border crisis:

    (1)Destitution and oppression in ill or mal-governed, hell-hole third-world countries drive citizens to desire better circumstances;
    (2)U.S. is a magnet beacon of work opportunity or welfare opportunities galore w/ more “freebies” promised by Democrats;
    (3)U.S. immigration laws barring entry are filled with holes & impediments against enforcement;
    (4)Change to laws making entry more difficult foiled or refused in Congress;
    (5)Mexican gangs offer & promote “easy”access for fees in part passed on to bribe government officials;
    (6)Children are sought, promoted & seen as “get-home-free” card as a form of hostage against the system;
    (7)Access to entry is not easy but dangerous by both terrain & from coyotes;
    (8)Border Patrol left with choice of capture & detention camps or opening borders and thus encouraging even more flow;
    (9)Detention camps for the last ten years are overcrowded and underfunded due to intentional shirking of responsibility by Congress.

    Now, assuming you care if the borders are flooded, and that is a big “if” for Democrats, which of these factors are traceable to the current administration? I submit, none. The Trump Administration did not invite, encourage or promote the immigration rush on the southern border by creating/increasing any of factors 1 through 7 & 9. It responded in the most logical manner to #8, which it’s predecessor, the Obama Administration, was also doing in large part. The responsibility for the current situation at the southern border lies with current and past Congresses, both Republican & Democrat, which have uniformly turned a blind eye to needs and requirements of border security.
