Sometimes when attention or focus is placed upon a perceived issue a pattern seemingly appears that is not in fact unusual. Remember the “sudden acceleration” scare focused on Audi cars years ago, and then years later the “uncontrollable speed” scare for Toyota vehicles that both just died away without any proof of wrongdoing or meaningful change in design? Maybe some few people just drive through their garages or can’t take their foot off the accelerator for some reason?

I heard a report on a TV news show that numbers of American deaths in the DR were actually down last year on a year-to-year basis. I could not confirm that, but would like a comparison. Of course, that would not be determinative because there could be an issue going back years that was unrecognized until now. What might be good to know is a comparison of numbers of deaths rates of tourists between the DR and, say, Hawaii or another Caribbean getaway. Maybe tourist just die or get sick on vacations without an intervening malevolent force.

That being said, I am as susceptible as the next guy to scares and will admit I am in no hurry to vacation in the DR now.
