President Trump said Tuesday that acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan has decided not to go forward with his confirmation process and is stepping aside as the interim Pentagon chief.
Mr. Trump said on Twitter that Mr. Shanahan has done “a wonderful job” but has chosen not to move forward with the process so he can spend more time with his family. Mr. Trump said he will name Secretary of the Army Mark Esper to be the new acting secretary of defense.
“I thank Pat for his outstanding service,” Mr. Trump said, adding that he expects Mr. Esper “will do a fantastic job!”
Mr. Shanahan was a longtime former Boeing Co. executive who had served as deputy secretary of defense since July 2017 before being asked to step in as acting secretary after Jim Mattis resigned in December 2018 over policy differences with Mr. Trump.
