    Your opinions please

This week both the NYT and the WSJ ran extensive articles regarding the US incursions into the Russian power grid(s).

Both General Nakasone and Mr. Bolton, through spokesmen, declined to answer questions about the incursions into Russia’s grid. Officials at the National Security Council also declined to comment but said they had no national security concerns about the details of The New York Times’s reporting about the targeting of the Russian grid, perhaps an indication that some of the intrusions were intended to be noticed by the Russians.

Speaking on Tuesday at a conference sponsored by The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Bolton said: “We thought the response in cyberspace against electoral meddling was the highest priority last year, and so that’s what we focused on. But we’re now opening the aperture, broadening the areas we’re prepared to act in.”

He added, referring to nations targeted by American digital operations, “We will impose costs on you until you get the point.”

Administration officials said they believed Mr. Trump had not been briefed in any detail about the steps to place “implants” — software code that can be used for surveillance or attack — inside the Russian grid.

Pentagon and intelligence officials described broad hesitation to go into detail with Mr. Trump about operations against Russia for concern over his reaction — and the possibility that he might countermand it or discuss it with foreign officials, as he did in 2017 when he mentioned a sensitive operation in Syria to the Russian foreign minister.
In my opinion, going after them is excellent---making it public in such a way is more debatable in my mind. I do find the comments about not telling trump about it encouraging and troubling at the same time. Keeping the loud mouth out of it is a great move, making an end run not so much.

I have to wonder if the WH staff even knew that the authorization for this was done in a bill trump signed last summer

I think it’s asking for trouble. First we claim they are interfering in our election by buying F book ads and then we hack into their electrical grid as a response .

Actions like that { could } I say again could be considered an act of “ war like “ aggression. Not a good idea IMO.

This is the kind of behavior that will go on between ideologically opposed governments as long as there are governments...It always has been and always will be better left to clandestine spy agencies...Then if the op is successful, the government that authorized the operative has clean hands...When it blows up in their face, they can claim the operative "went rogue"......Ben

I agree. We're supposed to be the clean, honest nation - different than the bottom dwellers. I don't think we should stoop as low as others do.

You’re kidding, right? By that reasoning, we would disarm ourselves in every phase of our defense. We would definitely unilaterally divest of every nuclear weapon in our arsenal, because “we are good guys” and it is unfair to match evil weapons.

I'm for it and have always assumed that we were doing the same thing. But telling them we are doing it is foolish. Does Russia now one up us on something else to get even? Then we one up them? When does the shooting start? The only ones that think we're the good guys are us. How long have we been using the Saddams of the world to get what we wanted only to end up with another enemy.

The story may have been leaked for strategic reasons, such as a warning that we are armed to play the same game our rivals are playing. You mess with our infrastructure: we mess with yours. It’s Mutually Assured Destruction carried out in modern cyber terms. Better our enemies know we are keeping up. It’s like Dr. Strangelove said about the Cobalt Bomb, “It is no good if your enemies don’t know about it.”
