    The homeless issue in America

I don't have a solution but 3 years ago these were not there. today everywhere you go there they are It turns your stomach to see folks existing this way

spent most of my day in Oakland in neighborhoods like this MLK and 23rd, actually this was one of the nicer cleaner encampments.

Build it (inviting welfare system) and they will come.

I don't believe that is the case here. The tech boom and high salaries have made for historically low end low income areas of the east bay to become easy pickings for the highly paid techies to swoop in and buy up and upscale the neighborhoods. Leaving the low income literally out in the cold. Service workers, teachers, Firemen and Police can no longer afford to live in San Francisco, San Jose or many east bay cities. forget fast food or janitorial staff.

I give you Seattle... My Brother lives in down town and it is getting bad enough that he has moved his recording studio to Belligham... And is now thinking about moving it again.

I don't know how anybody can afford to live in the land of fruits and nuts, maybe I'd better say on the west coast.. It doesn't mean you are now allowed to trash the city and break the law. They must be mostly white, black folk would all be in jail.
I'm with Joe, Build it and they will come! If they allow it what else can you expect. Be nice and leave a notice, as of 6-15_19 or what ever date the city will enforce its vacancy, littering and loitering laws. Camping permits can be bought at most state parks it is against the law to camp in the city.

They wear out the business's asking to use their bathrooms or the fast food places I guess you can just walk in and do what you need to. The churches and other groups feed the homeless here but you have to go get it.

Oakland at least gave them some dignity. Porta potties and dumpsters plus that was cheaper than cleaning up the alternative. Some folks scrounge for food others have jobs but they cannot afford the high rents of the bay area on minimum wage jobs. Hell there are Google employees that are living in RVs in parking lots because even they can't afford the rents out here. You build a company like Apple and its new 50,000 employee HQ. those folks make $$$ and they push out the lower income folks. pure capitalism by the landlords. rent or sell to the highest bidder

    Really?

So then, the cure is to cut them off from welfare?

I'm sure that would work out.

Yep that is what this country runs on. If Apple were to give an across the board pay raise the only thing you'd have is nicer tents. Every city in every state has the same problem, poor people, disabled, drug addicts, drunks, freeloaders. Every state has it's projects and, it's welfare with housing and food allowances. Everybody still whines, everyone still wants more. We are a nation of laws! How many times have I heard that? Now though we're forcing people like Phillbos brother to pack up and leave. The ones that are doing the right thing get punished because we don't enforce our laws. You can't have a random set of people that make their own laws. Raise your taxes and build everyone their own home, then raise your taxes again to pay their electric and water and food. I guess at some point we'll have to buy them a car too. Anybody you did that for, I guarantee it wouldn't be enough.
There was a thread back a month or so ago about people from all over the country pulling up roots and moving to Portland. I don't know the answer but it won't get better allowing people to do whatever they want as far as housing goes.

Make it less inviting and the druggies, mental cases and free-lunch types will largely go to the next best place. Won’t make any fewer (they will always be with us), but will lesson numbers of the ones moving in on you. California coddles ‘em, so that got a lot of ‘em. In Texas, we don’t, so we ain’t. What you pay well for you get more of — it’s an economic axiom.

I’ll have to admit California’s fine weather in many places is also an extra added attraction. Not even druggies and the insane want to spend summers under a Texas bridge.

Example of California molly-coddling homeless encampments —

Note Los Angeles is negotiating with homeless hoards on how much trash the city can remove and paying huge settlements to them! This is insane and is an example of “building it so they can come.”

Some folks need more help than is available, be it mental, drug or other issues that we wish or want to just go away. Not to be seen by the majority of us so they congregate where they can.

As an example we had to send our boy out to fend for himself. Turned from just a kid to a heavy drug user for pain. Mostly it is a mental issue but he refused to get help even when it was available. The last straw was when after my knee surgery he hit me. Called the police and they booked him and released him. To this day we don't know where he is or how he is surviving. The bad part we both wanted him to get the mental help yet he refused.

I just finished watching that video, everybody ought to. My take on it and this whole situation is that we need compassion. Not compassion that allows these people to live in filth and poverty strung out on drugs. We need to enforce our laws first, get these people to a place or into a situation that allows us to help them. One part of the video calls the problem a drug problem not a homeless problem. In the video they highlighted Rhode Island and their way of dealing with it. The answers are out there we just need the compassion to find the solution and use them. One girl who lives in a tent city says that 100% of her neighbors have some level of addiction. Another survey of cops is eye opening also, 82% of people arrested for drugs are not ever put through the system none spend even a day in jail, the cops have quit putting themselves in harms way. I could go on but better that you watch the video.
