One difference between the polls getting it dead wrong in the U.S. and in Australia is that here the polls excuse themselves because we never know if those polled will be voting or not, but in Australia voting is mandatory on pain of fine, so it is rational to think enough of those polled did not answer the pollsters honestly just like here. There is something about people not wanting to admit they like conservatives, but vote that way anyway. Their polls all consistently for several years have posted results that the Labor Party would win handily. The bookmakers there, where wagering on elections is legal, gauged their odds accordingly in line with the polls and lost their collective asses. Schadenfreude!
