    Back Home

We left on May 3 and got back yesterday, May 18th.

We took a river cruise on Viking Tours from Budapest, Hungary to Amsterdam, Holland. A distance of 1100 miles on multiple rivers and one canal. We traversed 68 locks in the process. Our elevation changed from 314' in Budapest on the Danube to the highest point of commercial ship traffic in the world on the Main Danube Canal at 574', then dropped back down on the Rhine to -6' at Amsterdam.

The ship was the Longship Viking Bragi.

We were in the following countries:

    Hungary
    Slovenia
    Austria
    Germany
    Holland

Overall this was a great cruise---and I do (did) not like cruises. Everything was first rate, the service was impeccable and the attention to detail refreshing.

I will write more latter---I have work to be done!

I was too relaxed to take pictures---I left that up to the retired folks among us

I'll see what I can pull together. My only photos were of a very unusual cable stayed bridge in Rotterdam.

The two times I was in Europe I took pictures of bridges and neat tin roofs in Romania, extreme fences in the Ukraine and so forth. Talked a manager type to allow me into the attic at the hotel we stayed at and took pictures of thousand year old rafters etc.. When I got back to the states everybody kept asking where were the pictures of the group and the people. That's what everyone was taking pics of!

    Excellent pic, Dave.

I'm pleased the trip went well and just as pleased you are back.

This was my third cruise--and by far the best yet.

My last one was on Holland America, I took my wife to Alaska up the inside passage to Skagway and then via bus over to Whitehorse in the Yukon, then to Fairbanks on the Alaska highway, down to Denali and then via train to Anchorage.

I did not like the cruise portion at all---it ignored everything that was going on around us. It seemed somehow phony.

My first cruise was a long one--28 days on the Pacific and then they dropped the anchor---told us to get off on the boats pulling up next to us---and then the bastards pulled up the anchor and left---took me a year and a half to get back home

The entire country is a spargel festival---and I am all in! I did not get my fill---but then again I don't know that that is possible

500g is a good start to a nice meal
