    One Democrat's Proposal I Like

I have never liked corporations and unions being able to donate political monies. There may be something wrong with this proposal, but I don't see it.

Rep. Adam Schiff on Wednesday introduced a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, which helped usher in a new era of big money in American elections.

    [SNIP]

By a 5-4 ruling, the high court in 2010 swept aside a ban on independent spending by corporations and unions in candidate elections, saying the restrictions amounted to censorship. Outside spending in federal elections has soared from $338 million in 2008, the last presidential election before the ruling, to $1.4 billion in 2016, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

I agree in principle with Schiff's proposal, but I'd like to see how it's worded, and that is not in the CNN article...Or maybe it's one of those things we have to pass into law before we can see what's in it......Ben

I agree Ben, it's those little by-lines and indexes that scare me.

What are the odds of this passing though? Slim to none, right?

I am always in favor of more and freer speech (communications). Give politicians and courts the power to control dissemination of information and they will control it to their advantage and my disadvantage every time. It is what they do. Flood the information streams with information good, bad & indifferent and let me decide what is righteous. I do not need any filters but my own.

    Citizens United was decided correctly.

It's not about communications, it's about corporations and unions being able to donate funds to politicians. I really don't like that at all. In fact, I think only registered voters should be able to fund politicians.

Citizens United was not about funding politicians, it was about individuals and organizations independently commenting upon politicians and issues even though it might accrue to a politician’s advantage or disadvantage. No one should ever be limited in expressing an opinion independently on political issues in my view such as McCain/Feingold tried to do. It was an abomination. Limits of donations directly to political campaigns was left intact by Citizens United.
