They are some really versatile aircraft...I wrote an article about one whose pilot found himself lost at sea on a training mission with only a few minutes of fuel left...He spotted a moving cargo ship with a deckload of shipping containers, and although the ship's captain maneuvered to avoid him, he set it down anyway, saving his aircraft...He was duly reprimanded and punished for his unauthorized landing...
And then there was the time Arnold Schwarzenegger took off from a highway and landed safely in the street after saving his daughter and doing away with the bad guys......Ben

They are cool aircraft. They use Scottsdale Airport as a refueling and rest stop. I watched 3 of them take off at the same time each used 1/3 of the runway... Loud mofos as well.
I wonder how long it took them to go get the stand and put it in place

Just back from several daze at MCAS Cherry Point Campground.. Harriers would do their slow motion version of a “touch &go” with “final” over the campers.. wowzers.. talk about loud,, with their deflectors down it sounded like we were on a carrier flight deck..
As a pup.. I was between Navy boot camp and tech school .. spent a few weeks home (no travel cost orders) “working” at NAF Washington (Andrews AFB).. well the Harrier was being shown (by British Aerospace) to Congress before the first purchase was funded.. bleachers were set up on the Navy/USMC side tarmac for the big show .. we were told to stay away and out of sight!
Being good sailors, we had personal requirements to see the forbidden show,, we found the hangar roof access.. a dozen sailors were behind the congressmen, on the hangar roof, best view in town..
We were shocked, stunned and amazed by the Harriers maneuvers.. had never even dreamed of such an aircraft .. Early Spring 1969 ...
