That has been the norm for years in the case of industrial EVs---like fork lifts and prime movers. The "highest" level of that is employed on driver-less EVs. The vehicle monitors battery condition and when necessary they return to the battery charging area, the charging system removes the depleted battery and slides in a fully charged one--and off the EV goes.
