I appreciate close control of over-fishing, as that can be abused easily. One of my favorite fish to eat is Orange Roughy, which was popular a few years ago until the stocks were depleted. It was found that they are a species which do not spawn until 20 years old and then are not very fecund when they do. Interestingly the real name of the fish is “Slimehead,” but the industry understandably adopted the new name because of the unappetizing real name. They are also quite ugly, so you won’t see them whole at the market. A few years ago Orange Roughy was mostly removed from the shelves under voluntary controls by the fishermen in the Southern Pacific mostly because they understand the issues.
Apparently the stocks have replenished enough that I am seeing Orange Roughy back in the fish cases and freezer where I live.

Looks like a marvelous solution to me.
When they imported the crappy carp to take care of the vegetation in Lake Conroe, the experts told us they had been treated so that they could not reproduce. They lied.

Very interesting Ben, thank you.

Interesting story: My primary home in the 90’s was lakeside on Lake Conroe. There was a very large bass tournament on the lake at that time, which drew bass fishermen from all over the country hunting big prizes on a fine bass lake. The departure point/marina for the tournament was right across from my house. The fishermen knew the lake and the good spots and apparently the rules were that everyone left from that same marina at the appointed time to get to their spot, which meant it was a race to get to the good spots. The idea was to mount as much outboard engine on the purpose-designed small, narrow and low bass boats as was made at the time, and you get on the stern without sinking the thing. Despite being designed to fish for bass in tight spaces, these things were fast to beat the other guys. On more than one year, the early hour the tourney kicked off the fog was so dense you could not see 100 feet in any direction. None-the-less, I witnessed, mostly by sounds, when the starting gun was fired, sounds commenced like a La Mans start with dozens of these boats racing past my house invisible to each other at probably upwards of 60mph. Insane! Serious fishermen are nuts! Never knew of any serious accident though.
Glad to read that there is cover for the fish again, but reading some comments, it sounds like the cover is now artificial dead brush and not the good live stuff due to the carp wiping out everything. I do know that when the hydrilla was dominant, more than one swimmer drowned by managing to get ensnared in the stuff.

The last guy I worked for was one of those...He could always tweak a few extra horses out of the 300 HP Mercury he had on his 14' bass boat...But he could handle it; he also earned a 200 MPH hat at Bonneville one year in a roadster that its owner was scared to drive himself......Ben
