The serendipitous discovery that satellites designed to study volcanoes by revealing gravitational fields associated with magma flows also reveals deposits of hydrocarbons and coupled with invention of techniques of fracking has revolutionized the oil & gas industry and greatly changed the political and economic geopolitical landscape. It is so competitively sensitive the information is guarded closely from the latest much improved satellites, but the measures of where those hydrocarbons are distributed around the globe are known. Bonus points: guess where the most is located?
Oh, instead of the old axiom that humans have only about 20 years of supplies of recoverable hydrocarbons left, we now know “that there is a century, likely two centuries, and possibly 5 centuries of economically recoverable fossil fuels.”
