    Found this Moth Today

I noticed a type of moth I have never seen before this morning. It is extremely well camouflaged for a natural setting. Not so much for the side of my house.

Of the few that look similar, I think it must be a Major Sallow Moth because of the location maps. The others apparently don't come anywhere near here. And, apparently rare for here. Thanks, Ben.

I sent the photo to the site Ben posted. Here is their response:

Looks like Feralia major to me. Ed Knudson has one which was DNA barcoded from Tyler County, TX, Sample ID EK-94-0048.

Major barcodes very close to jocosa and deceptiva. All three are int he same BIN group, BOLD:AAA9672. The taxon tree generated by barcoding has two branches for major, one off the deceptiva branch and the other off the jocosa branch. I guess it’s possible that one of the two major branches represents an undescribed species.

I have the Audubon book on insects (up at the cottage) so I could be of no help on this one. However, I find it very difficult to identify many moths and butterflies. There exists great variation in the markings between what is pictured and what is seen. Wing shape and size seems to be a less variable trait.

I see moths from time to time at night while walking my dogs especially under the street light down the street from my house. Not much identifying on my part as my male dog eats them on the spot. Disgusting.
