And how is this different than the papers I read----other than a generous dose of British tabloid photos?

The WSJ may well have offered the same information with more clarity.

    And this from the NYT:
Although the government has made no sign of reversing course on the gas tax increase that precipitated the most recent protests or of reducing other taxes, some of the Yellow Vests indicated that they were ready to negotiate.

It is difficult to determine who represents the movement, which has no official leader or membership. But a group of 10 representatives wrote an opinion piece in the Journal du Dimanche, a weekly newspaper, calling for negotiations with the government.

They called for an “immediate and unconditional freeze in the tax increase on fuel” as well as the cancellation of new and more rigorous vehicle inspection rules, which raise costs for drivers. They also asked to change the electoral system to one of proportional representation, which would benefit smaller parties, including those on the far left and far right.
Maybe your problem is based on your long list of cheap sources that can't charge for a subscription.

If you don't like your living conditions and disagree with the government spending... burn the friggin town down! What needs to happen now is the government needs to announce an increase in fuel taxes once again so that they can fix the damage that the rioters created. What? You say you want your house rebuilt, the business's that got burned up and down the street Maybe next year after assuring your safety with the purchase of new police cruisers etc...
This is your mind on drugs!

The problem in my mind, Dave, and what is left out from the the bit you offered, is that the tax instigating the rebellion is not a tax on fuel to raise revenue, it is a tax meant to lessen fuel use to “Save The Planet” by purposely being onerous and designed to kill the livelihood of truckers and change the lives of citizens. The rebellion and riots are never explained as violent expressions of mobs attacking stupid oppression by government they never got the chance to vote for when the reason given by the news is cavalierly termed opposition to a “gas tax.”

It should clearly be denoted it is a response to the heavy-handed imposition of the long-dreamed Carbon Tax so revered by Lefty Greenies everywhere including your New York Timesers, which explains why they did not explain that...or did they in parts you did not include? I would be interested to know if the NYTs felt the reasoning behind the “increase on the tax on fuel” was included as part of “All the News That's Fit to Print.”

I do not agree with your exclusionary explanation of the cause(s). This is not any different than any other "rebellion"---it is the result of multiple grievances. The news I read has been clear on that---not in an effort to dismiss the carbon tax but in the interest of a broader and more complete understanding of those causes.

    From this morning's NYT.

That is why Mr. Macron’s plans to raise the gasoline tax, modest an increment as it may seem, was the final straw for so many, the spark that finally set off a seething rage that has been building for years.

    .
.“Their response has poisoned the situation even more,” Mr. Depourtoux said. “The citizens have asked for lower taxes, and they’re saying, ‘Ecology,’” he said in a reference to Mr. Macron’s speech of last week where he outlined France’s plans to transition from fossil-based fuels to renewable energy.
I'd encourage you to expand your reading while keeping an open mind rather than look for verification of your current singular belief.

BTW---even your link does not support your opening statement that claims this is caused solely by the carbon tax.

Macron has around a 25% approval rating in his Country. How do these losers get elected if the people do not like them? Macron and others made a really big deal about Trump's refusal to fall for this fiasco, and they should listen to the people. The people are hurting, they are just trying to make a living, while the jet set crowd, who has flown all over the world is telling the "little people" they need to be more aware of their environment. Only the deaf and dumb can not see that the gas tax will be payed by the average citizen, who is just trying to survive day to day. They are not going all over the place on vacation, driving gas guzzlers and racing around, this affects their bottom line, it takes dollars out of their pockets that they use to feed, clothe and shelter their families. This is and always will be a stupid tax, meant to wring more money out of the hard working average people.
